I woke up in probably the most comfortable bed I've ever been in. That's not saying much, given that I grew up in a tatty orphanage that was always borderline broke. I looked around, the walls were a creamy beige and the floor consisted of dark wooden floorboards. There was a bookshelf crammed with books on wolves and healthcare, which was slightly worrying, that had a small plant that looked nicely cared for sitting on top of the oak shelf. I sat up, taking in my surroundings. "Ah, you're awake. I thought we'd lost you there for a while." said a deep, rich, and slightly accented voice. I turned my head to see who had spoken. "Who are you?" I asked, my vice hoarse. "Hmm, yes, hello, I'm Rythian." the man said smiling. He had dark brown hair, and green eyes. His hair had a bright blonde streak in it that immediately caught my eye. I tried to remember what had happened. The woman, the intruder, Tom, Cody. "Where's Cody?" I asked. "You'll have to ask Sparks*. I'll tell him you're awake." he said getting up. "Nilesy'll be in in a bit. He's the guy who patched you up." he said before leaving. Nilesy? Sparks? Who are these people Rythian speaks of? My question was answered minutes later when a man with black hair threw open the door and grinned. "Hello!" he said cheerfully, his voice carrying a thick scottish accent. "Hi." I said quietly. "I'm Nilesy, Rythian may have mentioned me." he introduced himself enthusiastically. I nodded. "Yeah, he said you're the guy who patched me up, so to speak." I answered. "Well, I'm glad to see my training has paid off." he said happily. "You're a doctor?" I asked. It's pretty clear that this place is no hospital. Its too nice and doesn't carry that horrific smell. "Nope! I make pools. But I have frequent practice." he said, his tone darkening a little. I gulped. "Soooo, where am I?" I asked, making an attempt to avoid hearing any more about Nilesy's practice. "You're at the Farm." he answered. "The Farm?" I asked. Nilesy nodded. "Well, when can I go home?" I asked. he looked at me, his light blue eyes looking sad. "Are you sure you want to?" he asked. I looked at the door as it opened and Tom rushed in. Finally, someone who can give me some bloody answers! "Nilesy." Tom said, nodding at the scottish man. "Sparkles*." Nilesy said getting up from the chair and leaving the room. "I'm going to go tell lewis that she's awake." he said before leaving. I looked at Tom. "Did he seriously just call you Sparkles?" I asked, holding in a smile. "With an asterisk." he replied, smiling. My eyes widened. "Not an asterisk!" I said dramatically. He laughed. "So, where's Cody?" I asked. Tom frowned. "He might've gotten away, but with the Setting Sun so intent on getting you, I doubt it." Tears threatened. "What did they want with me, Tom?" I asked, my throat tight. "Freya, they want to kill you." he said grimly. I looked up, alarmed. "Why?" I asked. Tom looked at me. "You'll have to ask Lewis. He knows more than I do." he said quietly. First my best friend and I get attacked, then we get attacked again, then Cody goes missing and I wake up in a really nice room with my doorman and a poolboy who thinks he's a doctor. "I want to see this 'Lewis' person." I demanded. "Touché." said a new voice. I looked at the door. Tom turned his head. "Lewis." he said respectfully. "Sparkles*." the newcomer said. Tom stood and left, waving at me before closing the door. "Hello Freya. I'm Lewis." the raven haired man said. He didn't smile, but he had a calming aura about him. "Hi." I said. It was obvious that Lewis was a leader of sorts. But I was unsure how to treat him. "Do you know why the Setting Sun wants you killed?" he asked, though his eyes said that he already knew the answer to his question. I shook my head, not trusting my voice. "Do you know who the Setting Sun are?" he asked. I shook my head again. He nodded. "Alright then. The Setting Sun is a group of people, an incredibly large one at that, who persecute magical beings, and magic users." he started. I scoffed. He's crazy! Utterly crazy! He sighed. "I thought that would be your reaction. But magic does exist. In fact, you see it every day. You have been trained to believe that it doesn't exist, therefore you do not notice it's presence. But it is there." Lewis said patiently. I thought about the recent events. I wouldn't be so sure about that, Freya Rae. Those were the words of the woman who'd attacked me and Cody. Then Tom, or Sparkles*, or whatever he goes by, seemingly turned into a wolf. After his eyes glowed, for that matter. "Go on." I said after a moment of processing the new information. "You, Freya Rae, just so happen to be a magical being. A werewolf, in fact. Just like the rest of us here on the Farm. Well, most of us. There are a few exceptions. Given that you had no idea that magic even existed until a few seconds ago, I would say that you had no knowledge of what you are." Lewis guessed. My mind was reeling. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up a minute, werewolves?" I asked incredulously. "Yes, werewolves." Lewis replied, his exasperated tone betraying his calmness. "I didn't drink that much gin, did I?" I asked. Lewis chuckled. "I hope not, a hangover would not feel very good right about now." he said grinning. "Please hold whilst I process this information." I said in a computer-like voice. Lewis smiled. "I have concluded that you are quite right, a hangover would not feel very good right about now." I said after a few seconds. He grinned and shook his head. "So, how did these Setting Sun arseholes know what I was if I didn't?" I asked. "I don't know." he said, his smile disappearing. "Oh. Ok." I said quietly. "However, Nilesy has informed me that you are well enough to walk. So I must, of course, give you the tour!" Lewis said excitedly. I got slowly out of the very comfortable bed and followed Lewis out the door. I suppose Tom had brought some of my pajamas, because I was wearing my favourite pair of pajamas. They were blue and had penguins on them. Very comfortable. The wooden floor was warm underfoot. I was about to ask Lewis about it but he started talking. "We have hot water pipes under the floors to keep them warm, and we keep the heat turned up for the hunters who come in during the winter. It also keeps people from getting sick. Though, there are individual thermostats in every bedroom." he explained. I nodded, impressed. "That must be expensive." I commented. "That's the best part, though. We have a field of solar panels, along with some wind turbines on the mountain, generating loads of electricity. We also have several greenhouses for our tropical fruits, along with the fields of crops, and the orchards. We have a large underground well for water. We are completely off the grid." he said proudly. I whistled. "You guys must've been loaded." I said. He chuckled. "You could say that. Sjin is an architect, he also owns the farm. He built most of this. Duncan, our science guy, set up the electricity and such. We didn't have to buy too much." he explained. "Wow." I said, my impression level rising exponentially. "Agreed." he replied. We came to a long hallway with lots of doors. "This is the girl's hall. Everyone has a room, and there are two full bathrooms. There are names on the doors so you know who's is who's. This is your room, next to Zoey's and across from Kim's." he said opening a door. The room was rather large. A twin bed was in the upper righthand corner and the walls were plain white. "That's so you can decorate easier." Lewis explained. There were two windows overlooking a field of golden wheat spanning as far as the eye can see. "When harvest time comes, everyone works on a section of the fields." he said noticing my interest in the field. The floorboards were chocolatey brown. Overall, it was quite nice. Next Lewis led me down a different hallway. It mirrored the girl's hall. "This is the boy's hall, my room is down at the end if you need me. But I don't spend a lot of time in there." he said briefly, before leading me down another, shorter, hallway into a large room. Tables lined the walls. "This is the canteen, and through there is the kitchen. Duncan and Rythian cook most of the meals, though Kim generally takes over on Wednesdays." He said. My head was spinning with all of these names. I nodded. The canteen seemed cheery enough, the lights were dim but windows littered the walls. There was noisy clatter from the kitchen, along with a little banter that I couldn't understand. Lewis led me around a corner to another large room, where there seemed to be a few people. "This is the common room. This is where we generally spend most of our time, although if you wanted to be alone, you could just go to your room." he said. This room was very.....roomy. Bookshelves lined two of the walls, and there were several very comfortable looking chairs clustered in corners and around a large fireplace. A few couches were also surrounding a large television. There were desks with computers on them lining one wall and a few seemed to be in use. The elegant lamps jutting from the walls emitted a warm light that gave the room a very relaxing feel to it. Lewis led me to my new room and smiled. "That's it for the tour, feel free to explore although I must ask you not to go out of property lines alone. Until you know the terrain, you're not allowed out there alone." he said. I nodded. "Thanks, by the way." I said. He smiled. "You're very welcome. Dinner's at six, I'll have Zoey take you down. In the meantime, go meet people." he said cheerfully. He waved and left the room. I looked at my watch. Its half four now, so dinner would be in an hour and a half. Time to go meet people.
