Hazel's POV:

I took a deep breath, allowing the salty smells of the air to enter my nose. A smile took over my face as I took in the view of the clear blue sky and the crashing waves. Before I could stop myself, I was running across the beach feeling the sand beneath my bare feet, giggling to myself. The heat of the sun giving me a type of high no drug could ever give me. Freedom. This is what I need. A fresh start.

Once finding the perfect spot, I set up camp with just a blanket and my laptop. Looking left and right, I noticed that the beach had no one in sight, leaving me completely alone. The thought excited me and a weight had been lifted off my chest.

All of a sudden, in the corner of my eye I saw something coming toward the shore. Jumping up, my legs carried me quickly over to the object. Only it wasn't an object. An outline of a man laid on his stomach just out of the water.

Gasping, I ran even harder, feeling the need to help the man. Once reaching him, I dropped down to my knees. I shook him hard trying to get any response out of him. Only it never came. My hands reached out to check for any pulse. None. My fingers began to shake and my heart rate picked up as panic set in.

Three years before:

"Wasn't that guy back there so hot?" Emmy faked swooned causing me to laugh.

"Go get him tiger, but he wasn't my type." She only rolled her eyes and tried looking for the next store to go visit. We had decided that New York City was the best choice for us since we were growing up together. The big city, the amazing food, great opportunities, and of course shopping.

Walking down lower Manhattan, also known as downtown New York, has given me a new sense of thrill. Emmy and I have grown to love the smell of smog and the rude hospitality of the residence's of New York. At first I hadn't enjoyed staying here, but I was stuck because we both attended NYU. Leaving became my number one priority, but I stayed for Emmy and New York grew on me.

I jumped when Emmy squealed and she started talking a hundred miles per hour, blurring all her words together. Picking up her pace, she grabbed my arm and  started dragging me through the crowded side walk. Her blonde hair wipping in my face and I questioned how her slim body could hold so much strength.

"Why are acting crazy?" I yelled behind her and heard people cussing at us as we pushed through.

"Do you not know anything about me. When I see a coffee shop we have to go." When we finally stopped I tried to see what the fuss was about. The coffee shop was small with a sleek black exterior. The windows outside revealed the crowded space inside but gave me Star Bucks vibes.

"They tried to copy Star Bucks style." I raised my eyebrow at my friend who was barely keeping the excitement in. After we ordered, a man with a black hoodie that covered his face came in and my heart rate picked up. Warnings started going off in my brain and my dumb blonde of a friend walked up to him.

"Hey. Um maybe you shouldn't wear a black hoodie people might think you are up to something." She flashed a flirty smile but the stranger in response pulled out a gun. Screams rang out through the coffee shop and I pulled my best friend away from him.

"What were you thinking!" I hissed in her ear.

Only it was too late. Gun shots rang in my ear and they wouldn't stop buzzing. The man ran out quickly leaving horrors behind him. The body in my hands became limp and when I laid her down, her blue eyes that once sparkled, now are becoming lifeless.
