It is Saturday. During this hour, our college campus is almost vacant. It's one of the less crowded day in the week. I love this day because it's less crowded everywhere, excluding the canteen. The cafeteria being the most crowded area all through the week.
'Isabella.....Isabella..' called out a voice.
I looked towards the door and smiled.
'Can you meet me outside the classroom?', he asked in a unfamiliar tone.I saw his innocent face and followed him. I knew I would miss the last lecture. So I hurriedly walked with his pace.
'What's the matter'?, I questioned.
'Please, just follow me', he answered without looking back.I was trying to keep up the pace but I was running out of breath and paused. To my surprise, when I looked around the campus suddenly felt unknown. It was like exploring a new territory which was way beyond my league.
He was right infront of me, still walking at the same pace. I was trying to figure out the new ambience. I had no clue how we missed the first right towards the main stairs and walked left reaching to the dead end of our campus.
Unlocking the main door, I was told to step in, taking off my shoes, despite the eerie silence, despite the fear caused by the absence of lights in the hall. I followed him without saying a word. We stood close to each other. It was in this moment, I experienced my unexplored dimension of fear of places.
Pondering courage, I asked
'Why are we meeting here and what's the matter that demanded such attention.''Relax Bella, I just want you to be here with me. I am feeling very lonely', in a relaxed tone.
'I am in no mood to skip classes to be here. I am going..Meet me after classes.', already irritated.
'Just for sometime. You don't have to talk. Just listen to me. Please stay. I need you.', he replied.
I looked at his face. His eyes expressed sadness. He was okay when I met him in the morning. I wanted to be there and make sure he is okay. I finally decided to stay back
'So tell me what's troubling you, Alcott.' I questioned.
'My very existence.' he replied in a flat tone.We spoke for a while. He seemed to express deep pain. The reason being unknown but I was set on the mission to unveil it.
I could never abandon my friend, he needed me the most. I waited till he felt better. I wanted to be a friend. I knew he would have done the same for me. That's what friends are meant for. We need to support and guide each other in moments of trail and error in our lives.
The deep conversation of life and the dark side of every individual is a part of life. We all are bound to bent and fall. Sooner or later, we will eventually rise again. Some need creepers while the rest manage on their own. There are few who give up even before trying.
The sound of the bell brought us back to reality. He directed me the way
towards my class. He wasn't infront of me. He was right next to me. As soon as we entered the hallway, the rush of students seemed to be highly disappealing.I looked back to find him. He wasn't there. I searched minutely and I couldn't trace Alcott.
It was a momentary pause. I looked up in front and finally spotted him again.
'OMG, you literally scared me, idiot', I replied in a relaxed tone.
'What's so scary?', he responded.
'You were just walking with me and then boom you vanished amidst the crowd. Let me grab my books. Let's go to the library.''Wait, he was with us all this while', replied his friend who was standing beside him.
I stood there motionlessly. I looked at him for few seconds. I was dumbfounded. It was a strange feeling. I didn't speak a word. I blankly stared at his face. The innocence in his face was still present, the grief was vanished.
'Bella, are you okay? ', Alcott asked.
Without any delay, I ran as fast as I could. I didn't know where my destination was but I wanted to be out of the face I encountered. It was scary to stand and narrate the story the present moment.I escaped. Panting, breathing heavily I ran away from my lived experience. It was one of the most unexpected moment in my entire life. Words fall less to comprehend the fear that was deeply instilled in my mind.
I failed to recognize the stranger clothed as my friend. It was a dark experience. Little did I know, it was just the beginning.
