4 - Run

For the first two hours I was able to hold a conversation with Charles, his son Bryan and their pack member Lucus, but after two hours I ran out of things to ask or talk about. Asking about their mates, what it was like when they met and asking about their children were the only conversation topics I could think of, and I am not one to really share details about myself so I finally gave up and let Anna do the rest of the talking. I have always preferred more attention being on her and off me and she always seemed content with that. At some point I drifted off to sleep and when I woke up again it was so dark that the only light that could be seen was from the controls on the dash. Even outside there were no moon or stars to be seen, the entire sky was covered, and I could faintly hear the soft sound of light rain on the car. It was very relaxing and rhythmic. Everyone but Charles, who was driving, was now sleeping.

"Good morning sleeping beauty." Charles said chuckling softly.

"How did you know I was awake?" I whispered back.

"The sound of your breathing changed."

"You can tell my breathing apart from everyone else?" I questioned suspiciously.

"Yeah you make it easy, you have a very soft snore." I felt my cheeks heat instantly.

"I do not." I said defensively to which Anna mumbled softly in her sleep and I mentally kicked myself for forgetting to whisper. Charles just snickered softly to himself. "So how long do we have till we meet up with the King's men?"

"In two to three hours." That seemed odd since Henrietta said that it would be a days drive until we met with them. As if reading my mind Charles continued. "Since you all were sleeping and I felt wide awake I decided to keep driving instead of stopping for the night. After hearing about your situation the King's men have done the same so we are meeting up with them way ahead of schedule. Plus, the sooner I get you to the King's men the sooner I can head back to my mate."

My eyes had adjusted to the darkness and I saw Charles smile slightly in the rear view mirror. I smiled back and said I understood. We were quiet for a few and I was still a bit tired and couldn't help the yawn that escaped my lips.

"It's still very early, why don't you try to get some more sleep?" Charles suggested and as I looked at the clock on the dash I saw that it was 3 am. "I have an open mind link with the King's men so I will wake you all about an hour before we meet them."

"I am tired but honestly I feel a bit ancy. I am not sure I can sleep anymore." I said as I started wondering what the King's men will be like. Would one of them end up as my mate? I could feel Lyn starting to stir getting excited again about her mate. If she was awake, I definitely wouldn't be able to get back to sleep. Before my mind started to wander too much, I noticed a pair of headlights way back on the road behind us. The road we were on was fairly straight so I could see the car way off in the distance. I couldn't help but wonder who else would be out on the road driving at this hour? I turned my head slightly so I could watch and after about 15 minutes the headlights where getting brighter and I could see that it was more than one car. Just as I noticed the second car I heard Charles mumble 'shit' under his breath and then nudge Bryan in the passenger seat waking him up.

"Talia wake up Lucus and Anna." Charles said no longer whispering. I did as instructed, Anna was groggy but both Lucus and Bryan seemed to wake up and be instantly on alert. Both were staring at the cars that were slowly gaining on us even though Charles was now accelerating.
