Jade's POV

"Don't worry, we don't actually do the whole giving-thanks thing," Liz said. "Or Thanksgiving in general, really."

She looked up as if thinking it through.

"This just happened to fall on the same day."

"Thank God," I said, visibly relieved. "I was starting to worry I'd have to pretend to be grateful."

Liz rolled her eyes.

Touchy displays of human affection had never exactly been my thing.

I watched uneasily as the maids set plate after plate of food across the enormous dining table.

Even after spending time around Leon's family, I'd never quite gotten used to the whole maid-and-butler lifestyle.

His butler had been great, though.

Leon's, I mean.

Sarcastic as hell. I liked him.

"Jade?"

I blinked and looked over at Liz.

"Huh?"

"I swear, I'll never get used to you randomly zoning out like that." She laughed. "And I've known you for almost a decade."

Before I could answer, the sliding wooden doors opened.

Liz's parents entered with the kind of effortless elegance that seemed to come naturally to people who had never once needed to check the price of anything.

Expensive clothes. Perfect posture. Mildly smug expressions.

Very on brand.

The change in Liz was immediate.

She sat straighter, and I watched the tension settle through her shoulders as her parents took their places at opposite ends of the table.

Nothing unhealthy about that dynamic.

"Good evening," her father said.

I gave him a polite nod.

The sooner we got through this, the better.

Dinner began.

A flatscreen mounted on the wall opposite us was playing one of those low-budget thrillers no one actually chose to watch. Something about a psychotic nanny being in love with the child's father.

Apparently that plot had not yet been exhausted.

"So, there's an exhibition coming up," Liz said after a while.

She kept her eyes on her plate at first.

"I'm going to put some of my work up. It's during Brown's Open Day, so parents and people from outside the university can come see it."
