"Liz," I called from the bottom of the stairs when I saw Jesse's text. "I'm going out."
She came down, looking down at her phone and didn't even bother asking me where. Instead, she just glanced at me and said, "Yeah, okay. See you later."
She's not giving me crap about this? That's weird.
I frowned at her unusual reaction but had no time to try to find out the source of her strange behaviour, so I brushed it off and made a mental note to ask her about it when I got back.
"Okay..." I threw on my jacket and waved Liz goodbye before walking out.
In the driver's seat of that old piece of junk was Jesse, staring down at his phone while he waited. I crossed the street and went round the trunk of the car to get to the other side of it.
"Took you long enough." I opened the door to Jesse's car and slouched into the passenger's seat.
"Yeah, well..." He said. "It's the first time I come to this part of town."
I rested a hand by the window and looked around the old vehicle. Even though it was obviously not even remotely close to being new, it did smell that way.
Clearly he took care of it.
"Liz has a hell of a house," he said, interrupting my thoughts.
"Yeah." I took a peek at him.
Jesse had both his hands propped down on the steering wheel, shooting me the occasional, nervous glance every now and then.
"I'm still trying to get used to it," I added. "It's nothing like what my house back in New York looks like."
He smiled softly. "So, where to?"
I game Jesse a quick shrug.
"You're the local," I replied, arching my eyebrows in amusement. "Where can we get party supplies?"
Jesse went deep into thought for a second until he finally said, "I think I might know of a place."

I walked silently along the corridor of that big warehouse, a green plastic basket in my hands and an idiot to my left.
"You know what I just realized?" Jesse broke the silence.
I waited quietly for him to go on.
"I don't really know anything about you," he said.
That's ironic.
I fought the urge to scoff. "So?"
Jesse shrugged as he looked around the place and followed me into an isle. "I don't know, I just thought it was weird, since I'm used to knowing my friends a little better."
