Jade's POV
"Okay."
I looked at Brody through my lashes, a faint smirk playing at the corner of my mouth as I bit down on my lower lip.
"Promise?"
"Mhm."
Now, I know what this looks like.
And yes, I also know none of you trust me.
Fair enough.
But for once, this was harmless.
I slipped my arms around Brody's neck and let my smile deepen. "Good."
My voice came out lower than usual, soft enough to make his expression change. His eyes darkened slightly as he reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.
I liked Brody.
Not in any complicated, life-altering sense. He knew exactly what this was, and so did I. Two college students having fun without pretending it had to mean anything more than that.
There was nothing wrong with that.
In fact, the simplicity of it was half the appeal.
And the fact that he happened to be—
"Why am I not surprised by this?"
I closed my eyes for half a second.

Brody glanced toward the doorway, then back at me, clearly trying not to laugh.
"Yeah, I'm gonna go."
He gave me one last amused look.
"Later, Jade."
I winked at him before he turned toward his sister.
"You and I are having a little chat later," Millie warned.
You'd think Brody was twelve.
He continued toward the door, and just before disappearing, he twisted his face into an exaggerated expression that clearly translated to I'm in trouble.
