In chapter fifteen, Matthew, Mare's dad, tells Jane that he has to work late that night. Later, he texts 'Lucy' unaware that Eva swapped the names in his phone. He comes home and hit Mare in front of Eva and Jane. In his rage he tells them Mare isn't his daughter and his first wife saved her from a car crash when Mare was only a baby. He tries to hit Mare again, but Jane steps in between them as Mare and Eva run from the house.
