A week later, Matthew was being held for assault thanks to the recording Eva got on her phone, and Jane took Mare, per her request, to have a DNA test.
"I read it," Mare said.
"Who are they?" Eva asked.
"George and Linda Hayes," she said.
...
Eva froze. "Hayes?" she asked tentatively.
"Yeah," Mare said. "What is it?"
"Is it possible you have a sibling?" Eva asked.
I know what she's getting at? Do you? Probably not because, like I said earlier, I am horrible with names and hardly ever use last ones?
"I mean, I guess so," Mare said. "Why?"
"Jake's last name is Hayes," Eva said. "His parents and supposedly baby sister died in a car crash twelve years ago."
There you go!
"Don't get her hopes up," Jane said. "It's not very likely."
"I know," Mare said. "Can we go see him, though?"
"I have you go with you, you know that," Jane said.
"I know, but he lives just down the street and your shift at the zoo doesn't start for an hour," Mare said.
"Okay," Jane said.
"Hey can we have your blood?" Eva asked as soon as Jake opened the door.
hahahahahahahaha
"What the heck?" he asked.
"The results from my DNA test came back," Mare explained. "Eva says our last names are the same and you know the stories are similar."
A week later, the report from the lab came back for Jake and Mare. He sat across from Eva and Mare as he opened it.
"What does it say?" Mare asked.
"I guess I need to start calling you sister."
What are the odds?
