I know a no when I hear it. And I will never mistake his no for a yes. People can look at the sky and say, that bunch of clouds there resembles an octopus but his NO is in no way similar to a YES . Not even a bit. He answered them firmly. Without sugarcoating. Without beating around the bush. Without a shadow of doubt if it ever has.
He sounded too cold for my liking but still I commend him for being a gentleman. He willingly took on the pain-in-the-neck task of saying no in front of all the elders when we both know we don't want anything to do with this arranged marriage.
I tried talking my way out of it. Presenting all the pros and cons (mostly cons) with no success. My parents are convinced I now need to get married and that there is only one person I can get married to. Great. So much for options. Even exams have more choices than this.
My reluctant groom is not faring well either. I guess it's a feat to convince our parents to let us have our way when neither of us have had any relationships yet while most of our peers do and some even settled already. Both of our parents too are no stranger to early arranged marriages. And both marriages were relatively happy. Which only makes it harder for them to understand why we are trying to avoid it. What we have is completely platonic but our four-eyed elders begged to disagree and has gone ahead with their imagined romance. How they can even picture us as a couple is beyond me.
