Chapter 9

I opened the door and snuck into my house. Luckily, I could hear my mom humming really loudly from her bedroom. The reason I didn't want my mom to see me is one, it was two in the afternoon so I've been gone ever since yesterday. I wouldn't know how my mom would feel about that, I mean she did say as late as I wanted. But that wasn't the only reason. I also was wearing different clothes, clothes that weren't mine. I don't know how my mom would feel about that either. So I just didn't want to take my chances. I tiptoed to the stairs and panicked when I heard my mom walking into the living room.

I ran up the stairs and into my room. I took off my borrowed clothes and threw them on my bed and picked a random pair of new clothes, I didn't care if they matched. My mom's footsteps got more and more noticeable as she climbed the stairs. Oh great! Where do I put the extra clothes? The closet! I opened the closet and threw the borrowed clothes into the closet. Then I ran and jumped onto my bed just as soon as my mom opened the door.

"Oh, hey mom." I said indifferently, pretending to play on my iPhone. She looked puzzled. "Oh, uh, hi honey. You're home?" She asked. I nodded, pretending not to be fazed by this question. "Yeah. I've been home for a while. Why?" I tried to sound as convincing as I could. "Oh, I didn't even hear you walk in. When did you get here?" Oh my gosh! How many more questions is there gonna be? "Oh...somewhere around 2am? I don't know, I wasn't paying attention. Is that okay?" I asked, trying to give her the hint to leave. She stared at me for a while, analyzing me. "Mmm...okay. Are you sure? What have you been doing all day?" More questions? Really mom? I shrugged. "Not much. Just hung out in my room. Took a nap. Oh!" I got a great idea. "I did go shopping around 11ish." My mom raise an eyebrow. "Why, might I ask?" I looked at her and rolled my eyes. "For Angie's party mom! Geez, you need to pay more attention."

felt bad. I didn't like lying to my mom, but I didn't want to get in trouble for a stupid reason. And it wasn't completely a lie...I was going to go shopping for Angie's party, I just need Angie's help because I didn't have the greatest sense of style.

"Oh! That's great! I remember parties we had when I was your age. I mean your dad and I. Do you know that we were together since we were sixteen? Look how that turned out for us." She rolled her eyes. I stared at her. "Okay mom. Good talk. Now bye-bye!" I waved her off. She stuck her tongue out at me. "Okay, okay. I get it. You want your privacy. You're a teenager. I get it." She babbled as she walked out of my room. "Shut the door on your way out!" I yelled, but I knew she was already too far away. I heard my mom mock me then walk down the stairs. I sighed. That was a close one.

Maybe I should call Angie? I need to get my mind off of AJ. I pulled my phone out and dialed Angie's number. "Hello?" I heard Angie's familiar voice threw the phone. "Hey Angie. Are you busy today?" There was a long pause. "Uh, no. Why?" She asked. "Because I was wondering if we could go shopping today." Angie got ecstatic. "Oh my gosh! Really? Yeah! Totally! No, I'm not busy! Yeah, just say the time! I'll come and pick you up!" She babbled. I laughed. I knew Angie would be game for anything if it involved shopping. "Uh...I don't know. How long do you think it'd take you to get here?" I said. The sooner the better. "Oh...maybe ten minutes? Fifteen? Not long!" I nodded, even though I knew she couldn't see me. "Sounds good." Angie laughed. "Oh, I'm just so excited! But I have to ask, what's the occasion?" How did Angie know something was up? "Uh...nothing I just want to look good at your party. Why, does something have to be wrong?" I asked, trying to make it sound like I actually wanted to go, even though I didn't really. "Amber, I know you better than that. I'm not totally stupid. You're not a shopper. You'd rather spend a whole day pulling your hair out and scraping your head against a cheese grater than go shopping." I was shocked. Angie does know me more than I give her credit for. "How can you tell? You've only known me for a week?" Angie laughed. "I know these things. Okay, count on...fifteen minutes and I'll be there." She said. "Okay, See you-" I got cut off by the phone cut off. She hung up. Okay...that was easy.
