Chapter 14
"Yes, Mr. Hinley?" I asked, a little scared. Did I do something wrong? He stalled until everyone was out of the classroom. "Amber..." He walked over to his desk and started skimming through a pile of papers. "Uh, I'm going to be late for my next class. So..." I hinted. Since I didn't like Mr. Hinley that much, I didn't really want to spend more time with him then I needed too. He sighed and pulled out a piece of paper. "I know. I have a class too." He walked over to the door and shut it. Probably so no kids could walk in and interrupt him. "I wanted to talk to you about this." He handed me and piece of notebook paper. I don't remember turning it in. I extended my arm and snatched the piece of paper out of Mr. Hinley's hand.
It was just an ordinary piece of paper, but it had writing all over it. Up, down, side to side, diagonal. Everywhere. I even flipped the paper over and more was on the back. I looked back at Mr. Hinley. "Yes, sir? Am I missing something?" He chuckled a little then looked at the clock. "Read it." He urged. I sighed, really not seeing the point, and started reading it. The first thing I noticed was, right in the middle of the paper, big letters that read BUBBA. I glanced at Mr. Hinley and kept reading. There were more words on the paper like AJ, LOVE, STUCK, BLAKE, CHOICE, and hearts were everywhere.
I was so embarrassed I didn't want to look up. I was glad I only put Bubba and Blake's name once. AJ's name was everywhere. I couldn't believe that I actually turned this in to Mr. Hinley out of all teachers! I'd rather turn that into like Mrs. Right or something. Either way I'd still be embarrassed. "I...I'm sorry, Mr. Hinley. I just...I've got a lot on my mind right now."
He laughed. "Oh, Amber. I'm not mad. I just want to make sure that this isn't affecting your school work. I've noticed that your grades have been starting to slip for about a week now. If something's wrong, you know there are counselors and teachers, and there's always friends." I crumpled up the piece of paper. A counselor?! I don't need a Counselors help! And definitely not a teacher's! I shoved the paper in my backpack.
"I'm fine, Mr. Hinley. I promise. It's nothing bad it's just..." I couldn't believe that I was actually going to tell Mr. Hinley what's going on in my life. I couldn't find the words. "It's just...can I go?" I finally asked, looking at the clock and seeing that I was going to be late to PE. He nodded. "Here let me write you a note." He grabbed a piece of scratch paper and jotted down some words and gave it to me. "Thank you. And I promise I'll start picking up my grades." I said, and grabbed the note from his hand. He nodded. "I trust you Amber." He said and I was out the door. There was a small crowd forming around his room, I'm assuming his next class. I quickly ran to my locker, threw my stuff in it, and ran to the PE locker rooms.
"Let's start off doing twenty push ups. If you still aren't doing them to my standards then there'll be some sort of punishment." Ms. Caring yelled. I walked out to everyone getting on there hands and knees doing push ups. Lincoln High School's push ups. I always felt so out of style in PE, with my baggy green sweatpants and boring gray t-shirt. Then my hair in a sloppy ponytail, just because I didn't have enough time to work on my hair. Ms. Caring turned and looked surprised. "Amber? You're never late. Is something wrong?" She sounded concerned. Apparently Mr. Hinley wasn't the only one. "I have a note." I gave it to her and took a spot by Monica and started doing push ups.
Pretty soon we were done with the warm up and it was time to run the track. It was a nice day out, oddly enough, and Ms. Caring thought we should all get some fresh air. I started running and me and Monica stayed together usually talking. We kept a steady pace. We were almost on our second lap when Bubba cam up behind me. "Oh, Bubba! You scared me!" I screamed, probably a little louder than I should have. "Oh, sorry. Hey, what's up?" He sounded in a good mood. Well, he probably is because I agreed to go to Ivy's pool party. "Not much, just jogging around the track." I said between breathes. "Yeah, me too." He replied. Monica was just jogging by me, being silent. I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, I see that..." I trailed off. Bubba nodded. "Yeah, kinda obvious I guess. But, I wanted to tell you something." He said, keeping his composure. I smirked. "Okay...hit me." He looked a little hesitant, but he finally spit it out. "I have a girlfriend now." He announced and sped ahead just enough so that I couldn't question him about it at all.
