I fiddle with my fingers, staring at the grey floor. The police officer from our first meeting on Thursday two weeks ago was sat opposite me, sorting through a wad of papers.
Dad was sat outside, not allowed in. Some silly rule. Like he would do that. Or me, for that matter.
"Ok, Lola," the officer looked at me and smiled, "Let's get started. My name is Officer Row."
I nod, not sure what to say.
"So, what time exactly did your mum call you?"
I think back to Friday night, two days ago. As soon as my dad had come home I had raced towards him, bawling my eyes out. He just soothed and cradled me, unsure what to do. But when he discovered it was mum, his eyes flared with disappointment and then a fiery anger. He called Doctor Leon, who then called Officer Row. And he told dad to bring me down to the station so he could have a chat with me.
"Um... about nine? Ish? I was getting ready for bed and I was about to go to sleep."
Officer Row nods, writing it down. "Do you have your phone so I can copy the caller ID?"
I nod, passing him my phone. I feel self conscious as he does a few things to get the phone number so they can track its location, even though I know he's not reading my messages or anything.
"Enjoying school?" Officer Row asks, looking at me quickly before going back to finding the number.
I sighed. I know he's just trying to lighten the mood, but it really is the worst subject. I pull a face and luckily he doesn't notice.
"Its good," I deadpan. Officer Row nods, not really paying attention.
"Any boyfriends?"
I frown-- I'm not exactly sure an officer should be asking me that.
"No."
He quietens down, focusing on my phone. I sit, welcoming the silence.
After a few more minutes, he hands my phone back. "There we go." He smiles. "I've got it, and I will send it to the hackers so they can get more info."
I nod and slide my phone back in my back pocket. "Is that all?"
Officer Row leans forward. "Well, technically, yes. But I was wondering if you would want me to book an appointment with our therapist for you? She's really great, and I'm sure she can help you through all that's going on with your life."
I freeze, embarrassed that Officer Row would even suggest that. "No thanks." I didn't look at him.
Officer Row nods sternly. "Make sure you think about it, and call me if you change your mind."
Waving as I leave the stuffy interview room, dad engulfs me in a hug. "Ah, lolly, I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I've never been so anxious my entire life. I was just imagining the worst-- I don't ever want to see you in an interview room again."
I nod into my dad's chest; I understand what he means. It was pretty scary, even though I knew I had done nothing wrong.
