A/N: Sorry it's been a while, I was gathering inspiration. This chapter and the next will involve some heathstrid, because (a) it's my favourite, and (b) it's essential for Astrid's character development/plot (I still plan for endgame hiccstrid, for those of you who are full-out hiccstrid shippers, so don't fret! In this AU, Astrid needs someone she knows she can trust with her feelings, someone from her past who still holds a lot of intimate value to her, and in this case that person is her ex-lover Heather)
For those of you curious, Astrid and Heather's breakup was not violent! It hurt them both, but they still continued to talk and remain best friends all the way up to when Astrid ran away. In the next few chapters I delve into their past relationship and explore how they react to each other after years of assuming the other was gone. So yes, there will be some kisses, and if you don't like that that's okay! You can always skip over those parts, or pretend it didn't happen.

For all the readers who are lgbtq+ (I myself am bisexual!) I want y'all to know that I fully support you and that my account and stories are safe spaces 💞

Also to clarify, Astrid ran away from home three years after completing highschool , during her third year at uni. She was 20 then, but at the time of this fic, she is 25.
Heather and Astrid had started dating in the 8th grade when they were thirteen, and broke up the same year Astrid ran away, when they were twenty. So in total the two dated for seven years.
This will be touched on later, but Astrid was studying to be a tattoo artist, and was three years into her fine arts degree when she ditched.

Astrid's POV:

By the time I woke up the forest was dark. Not that that meant much to me, it's not like I was trying to go anywhere. The pain in my stomach had quieted down, now just a dull throb.

That's something I can thank my powers for I guess.

I sat up slowly, my head was pounding and my sight was still a little bit fuzzy, but I was still alive. My shirt on the other hand had not survived the ordeal. The white fabric was stained with a copious amount of blood, so much so I was surprised I hadn't died of blood loss in my sleep.
Gingerly I peeled off the shirt, tossing it to the side. I gazed down my stomach at the wound, it was wet with blood, a couple of streams still flowing stubbornly from the punctures.
Grabbing the shirt once again, I managed to tear away a few strips of fabric that hadn't been affected too badly by the blood. I pressed the bundle of fabric to my wound carefully, wincing slightly in pain, before I moved to get up; suddenly deciding I wasn't exactly in the right shape to fight any wayward woodland creatures that might make a nice meal out of me.

And so, hand clutched to my stomach, I made my way through the forest going what I hoped was the way to civilization.

Hiccup's POV:

"Shit shit shit shit shit-"

"Hiccup calm the fuck down!"

"How can I be calm when we literally just lost an entire human being??"

"I- hm. Good point."

Astrid's POV:

The darkness in the forest was creeping, it twisted and forked around trees and through ferns like a serpent, it's greedy tongue lapping at the corners of my vision.

I morphed my eyes into something cat-like, the tapetum enhancing my visual sensitivity as I wandered through the woods.

In the distance I could hear the sound of a motorway, busy even at night. Every time the breeze kicked up I was hit with a mild acrid smell, gradually getting stronger as I approached the road.
