Hanahaki Disease

(花吐き病 (Japanese); 하나하키병 (Korean); 花吐病(Chinese))

A fictional disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from . It ends when the beloved returns their feelings (romantic love only; strong friendship is not enough), or when the victim dies. It can be cured through surgical removal, but when the infection is removed, the victim's romantic feelings for their love also disappear.

"Haven't you seen her lately?" "Yeah, she's a complete mess!" "It's so sad..." "Who could she possibly be sick over?" "Did you hear about this morning?" "Oh! She passed out in the bathroom, right? Didn't Sasha find her?"

Levi took a sip of his tea, listening to everyone gossiping around him about the poor cadet. He sat at the dinning table with fellow squad leaders and Erwin, noticing the absence of Hanji. It was usual for her to get caught up with her experiments, but this time it struck a solemn feeling into everyone at the table- after seeing her grab extra bread and tea before running off.

"Man, there was a lot to clean up this morning- It was almost like a titan was let loose in there..." Sasha sighed loudly, taking another large chunk of her bread between her teeth.

"There couldn't have been THAT much blood, Sasha..." Connie interjected, crossing his arms over his chest as the others in my squad nodded.

"It mixed with the water in the bathroom..."

Levi stared blankly at the remaining drops of tea in his cup, thoughts swirling through his mind. Finishing his tea off, he pushed his chair out and made his way out of the mess hall, navigating the hallways to Hanji's office. He firmly knocked on her door, opening it up and stepping into her office.

His eyes widened a fraction, looking and the horrific scene in front of him. You lay, sound asleep on Hanji's lap as she patted your back gently, bloody flowers littered around you. Your cheeks were blotchy and red- a trail left behind from crystalline tears staining your face.

"Oh! Levi!" Hanji looked surprised to see Levi at the door- staring at them both on the floor. He took a few steps forward, crouching down next to the two of you, inspecting you.

"Tch... The brat has made a huge mess..." He mumbled under his breath. A glimpse of green caught his eye- and his eyes traveled down to your hands. Gently, he opened up your hand and removed a fully budded rose- complete with a stem and thorns. Shock had taken over him, and he didn't know what to think. You didn't have much time left- and all they were able to do was watch.

"She tore it out- it was hard to watch. And to think we had already seen it all..." Hanji spoke softly, Levi turning his gaze to her soft, sad smile.

~Time skip~

I sat at my desk, flipping through paperwork between sips of my favourite black tea. It was silent- the perfect working environment. My oil lamp burned slowly, the flame flickering every one and a while, almost at harmony with the bright, full moon that resided in the sky with the stars. This was how I preferred to be- alone to my thoughts and without the sound of the cadets fighting. The steam from my tea heating up my face, a heavy sigh escaping my lips as my fingers raked through my hair. My eyes slid shut, admiring the silence. However that silence was interrupted, as heavy foot steps appeared in my hearing range. Whoever it was, they were sprinting at this point in time- directly towards my office. I watched as Krista burst through my door, without even knocking. Her panting, out of breath face was lit up by the lamp she was holding as she supported herself on the door, catching her breath. I raised an eyebrow at her, wondering what could possibly be that important.

"Captain! It's (f/n)!" She gasped out with a panicked face- watching dread cover my own. I felt my blood go cold- not wanting her to continue. I abruptly stood, rushing out of the door towards (l/n)'s room. As I neared, I heard awful screams of agony, drowned in coughs and gasps for air. I rushed into her room, seeing other cadets around her, trying to keep her upright as they all looked on in horror. I rushed beside her, kneeling beside her to assess the situation. She was covered in blood- petals shining in the moonlight as the spit was lit up. She was ripping bloody stems out of her throat, trying to hold back the urge to vomit.

"I'm taking her to Hanji! Clean up this mess!" I yelled at the Cadets, picking the poor girl up bridal style and rushed out the door. She clenched onto my shirt, sobbing loudly as blood stained the linen.

"Levi, please!" She gasped, between sobs. I looked down at her as I neared Hanji's office. "I have to-" She interrupted herself by violently choking, clenching her throat as if she was trying to strangle herself. I readjusted her in my arm, using my now free arm to pry her hand off her throat as she squirmed in pain. I kicked down Hanji's door, making the scientist jump in fright, knocking over a glass tube- that was luckily empty. She turned around at lightning speed- immediately jumping into action as she saw (f/n) squirming and gasping, along with the look of 'help' that my face showed. She grabbed her from my arms, placing her down on a bench, grabbing a fresh pair of gloves and putting them on.

"Please!" She begged, trying to get away from Hanji as she reached out to me- nearly falling off the bed in the process. I stepped forward, taking her hand in mine as I was fear stricken.

"(f/n), I'm resorting to surgery- Levi! Grab my medical kit!" she yelled, watching me scamper off to her cabinets. I cringed as I heard (f/n) screaming in protest, yelling 'no' as she tried to get away from Hanji. "Then who is it! Tell me, (f/n)!" I heard Hanji scream at her, in a very frustrated voice as I finally found the kit. As I picked it up, I heard a very strangled voice say my name.

"It's Levi..." I froze, letting the medical kit slip out of my hands as I stared at her. Hanji stared in shock, watching (f/n) pull a stem out of her mouth again. Me? I did this to her? She loved me that much, and refused to give up on me? Memories of her caring for me were flooding my mind, finally putting all the pieces together. She's willing to die for... me?

Hanji rushed and grabbed the medical kit up off the ground, pulling out a syringe and sedating her. I gagged, watching her go limp as my hand clasped over my mouth, trying to stop myself from throwing up. Hanji took in a deep breath, grabbing out a tool to remove stems and thorns from her throat that got caught.

"Can you get her some tea to help sooth her? Make sure to put in marshmallow root-" She trailed off- turning to look at me as I doubled over, stumbled towards the sink. "Levi?!" She gasped, watching me collapse over a sink, gagging violently. What's wrong with me? I've watched soldiers suffer worse, and remained unfazed, so what's wrong with me?

Hanji held onto me, helping me keep my balance as I looked up at her, in fear. "I... I think I love her..."

You woke up, slowly opening your eyes that were being attacked by the harsh light that came through the window. Your throat burned, but the coughing fit wasn't coming. "Here, have this."

You looked up to see Levi sitting beside your bed with a smiling Hanji. In his hands was a cup- likely containing tea and marshmallow root. Processing your surroundings, you panicked and sat up, nearly ripping off your shirt to see nothing. No signs of surgery. Nothing. You whipped your head around to see Hanji with a bright smile, nudging Levi as he passed you the drink before she left the room with a now creepy smile.

"It'll take a while to heal your throat." Levi's spoke, not taking his eyes off you. However his gaze was different this time- it was soft and loving instead of the usual dark and harsh. You blushed, heart fluttering as he pulled his chair closer to the bed, cupping your face in his hand. "I'm sorry... I put you through so much pain..."

You stared at him- realising that you must have let out that he was the one you were in love with in the whole fiasco that happened last night. Biting your lip, you looked right into his eyes- noticing that his were looking away. You leaned forward, capturing his lips in yours for a kiss filled with passion and longing. He melted into it, running a hand through your hair as one remained cupping your cheek, rubbing gently with his thumb away stray hairs.

"I'll love you to the end of my time- as you did for me. I won't give up on you- like how you didn't for me." He whispered, a smile forming on my lips.

"I love you..."
