Katrina looks at me in utter disbelief. I would too if someone told me they were an alien.
"Wait, so you're telling me you're an alien that came to Earth from another planet and I'm one of the chosen ones or something? That's why I was on fire?"
"Yes, yes that sounds about right. And I know it's hard to believe but it's true."
"So basically I have superpowers."
"I guess, yeah, but I have no clue who those people were."
She gapes at me, speechless, "You're serious?" I just nod, trying not to sound insane. She stares at me, mouth agape. We gradually lapse into silence.
After a long moment, Katrina looks at me. "I'm sorry about your sister."
I shut my eyes briefly before training them on the night sky. "She would've loved this place. I promise everyday that I'll make her proud, somehow."
Neither of us speaks, both of us choosing to watch the stars instead.
"I should get back." Katrina whispers. I glance down at my watch to see we've been sitting here for almost a half hour.
I stand slowly, helping Katrina up before brushing the dirt off of me.
We walk slow, not speaking, each of us are in our own worlds.
When we reach Katrina's house she turns to me, "So, are you really serious about all this?"
"I wouldn't lie."
She smiles at me, "Goodnight Jack."
"Goodnight Katrina." I reply.
I walk back to my apartment with my hands in my pockets, letting my mind wander. Then I realize that I'll have to tell Nathan and Mary that I found my Connector. When I arrive at the apartment and step in, I am immediately confronted by the two.
"Where were you?" Mary asks me, clearly upset.
"I told you, I had to take Katrina home."
"Taking someone a mile or two away doesn't take an hour and a half." Nathan exclaims.
"Well, we kinda got stopped by some people, and I found out that Katrina is my Connector." I mutter.
"That girl is your Connector? When did you-?"
I cut him off, "Two days ago."
"And what do you mean you were stopped?" Mary looks at me, curious.
"Some guy started following us so we ran. We were cornered and two people tried to kidnap us. Then Katrina and I kinda caught on fire."
I leave out a few details, not wanting to face the full fury of the two.
"So you can control fire, that girl is your Connector, you were almost kidnapped, and you didn't tell us about any of this! Are you okay?!"
Nathan and Mary are very unhappy. All I can do is nod.
"Yep."
"Go to your room, please."
Relieved, I sigh. "Will do."
When I get to my room I grab my phone, wanting to text Katrina. But I know she is probably trying to figure everything out, me calling her wouldn't really help with that. I try to fall asleep but end up staring at the ceiling. I try to think about who those people were.
My train of thought takes me back to when we first arrived on Earth, I search the faces of everyone in my mind. Then I see someone, a woman with dark hair and bright blue eyes, just like the one that tried to kidnap Katrina.
My eyes snap open, realizing who that must have been. One of us. I think. But that can't be right, we're Defendre, meant to protect not harm.
It can't be her. Why would she come after us? Her own kind. I won't believe it's her until there is some evidence of it. It can't be her.
