I can't believe that it's been two months already... there's only one month left.
And apparently I was staring into space for too long because Sarah, the ranger from Cabin 19, nudged my shoulder.
"Oi, Banning's boy! You should be either in the lake or on lifeguard duty. And if it's lifeguard, then you suck at it."
"Hey! My leg has a cramp that won't let me swim," I bullshited. She raised an eyebrow.
"Just lett'em rest Sarah. I'll make sure to take him on a walk later," an angel spoke out.
"Fine. Good luck Ez," Sarah grumbled before walking off. Shortly after, I felt a smack on the back of my head.
"OW! What was that for?!" I exclaimed.
"A leg cramp!? Really. You could still lifeguard with a leg cramp around here, especially with the older kids," Esme said as she sat down beside me.
"Well then where are you supposed to be madame?" I questioned.
"It's my cabin's free hours since Sammy is helping out with the End of Summertime dance," she replied.
"The end of what now?" I asked. She stared at me.
"End of Summertime dance. Dang, I know that this is your first year here, but come on! No one's told you?" she asked. I shook my head.
She sighed, "the End of Summertime dance is pretty much just a celebration, but it's held a week before camp ends. All rangers help cordinate it. This year it's supposed to be a masquerade."
"How would everyone get the supplies for that? A masquerade involved masks and dresses and tuxes..." I trailed off. She giggled.
"The guys wear a white button up with a vest piece and a tie. Dark pants are the only requirement for your pants. Masks are part of arts and crafts. As for the dresses, most girls either bring their prom dress or go into town to shop for one with their camp coins. You know, the ones you get from camp jobs and doing activities?" Esme smiled. I stared at her. Why wasn't I told any of this?!
"Well then... will I be seeing you there?" I asked. She laughed and nodded.
"We sorta have to go..."
"Ah, well if we have too..." I groaned, resting my arm around her shoulders. She blushed slightly, trying to hide it.
We've come a long way... haven't quite kissed yet, but hey at least we didn't break up yet.
After a while, Esme had all of her weight against me. Not that I minded, but at times like this... I nearly forget that it's all just a bet.
Once she finds out, she'll never trust me again. Hell, she won't even talk to me.
"Quit it."
"Huh?"
"Quit the worrying. I dunno what it's about... But whatever it is, it will turn out alright," she reassured me, looking up at me with a closed-eyed smile. I sighed through my nose, smiling lightly before kissing her forehead.
"Okay honey," I answered.
We sat in silence for the rest of the time, just staring out at the lake. At least until-
"LOVEBIRDS! WE'VE GOT A SURPRISE FOR YOU!" several voices yelled at us.
"SO GET THE HELL UP AND COME HERE," Noel boomed. Esme laughed before freeing herself from my arms.
She stood, grinning with her arm extended to me, and stated, "well... let's hurry up then."
Thump-dum, thump-dum, thump-dum...
Fuck.
