"Mashi, do you think we can be friends forever?" Sakata asked as he laid down on the purple-haired boy's lap.
"Why do you ask?" Shima asked, confused as he started to play with the younger boys red hair.
"Because Father's been asking me to stay away from you..." Sakata looked away from Shima, watching the horizon. "I don't understand why..."
Shima frowned at the boy's statement. His father had told him the exact same thing, but he knew why. Both their countries were going into war after all...
"Prince Shima, we have to leave now," his personal servant, Senra said as he approached the pair alongside Sakata's personal servant, Urata.
"That goes to us too, Prince Sakata," Urata commented as he extended a hand to help the red-haired prince up. "His majesty requested for your presence as soon as possible."
"Right..." Sakata grasped Urata's outstretched hand and the latter pulled the younger prince up from his lying down position with ease.
Shima sighed and stood up. As they grew older, their time together grew shorter and now they were even told to avoid each other.
It was like the Gods were playing a game with them, testing their friendship.
Sakata smiled at the purple haired boy.
"See you soon?"
Shima looked to Senra, who shook his head. The older male sighed and patted the redhead's shoulder.
"I don't think so, but we can still write letters."
Sakata frowned. It took them three months to meet again, how many would it take this time?
Shima sighed at Sakata's pouty face and pulled him into a hug.
"I'll try to meet you again as soon as I can, okay?"
Sakata smiled weakly and returned the hug.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Little did the two young princes know, the promise would be broken the very next day, by the war that their fathers had started.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Father, I don't think you should continue this war! Surely there are better options than war!"
"Silence, Shima!" Shima winced at the harshness of his father's voice. "War is the best way to solve this right now. Hold your tongue if you are going to just talk about a non-existent method that does not benefit our time!"
The 20 year old bit his lip. His father was becoming more and more irrational day by day, insisting there is no peaceful ways to solve the war.
"My apologies, Father..." Shima mumbled as he bowed before his father.
"Leave this room right now if you're just going to be a waste of space right now."
Shima shut his eyes tightly. What happened to his kind father?
