Most people with a reasonable awareness of their surroundings and familiarity with the typical college strata could pick out the most popular girl in the room at a single glance.
It wasn't always the peppy, prettiest blond cheerleader. It wasn't even always the sweetest, most likable girl in the year. It wasn't necessarily the class slut, beautiful or not and getting it with whoever she wanted, regardless of gender. And it wasn't necessarily the rich girl, either; the one with all the connections and the most expensive car in the student car park.
Mystic High had noticed the most popular girl was the one who caused a gravity shift when she walked in the room. It was the girl who, whether she knew it or not, caused others to orient toward her when she was there, gyrating inevitable as sun-drawn plants.
Jade walked into canteen and searched automatically for the focal point of the room in order to find someone. There was none. Several groups were scattered around; the usual jocks, studious types, crewbie stragglers, a few lone emo kids, and some less visually quantifiable groups sitting around chatting, eating, or doing homework.
Jade strode to one of the unoccupied tables. She bent her head and began to scroll her Instagram. She then was making out list of things to focus on when the double door to the student center swung open.
She looked up, and gravity shifted.
The person striding through the doors with a posse to either side was tall, gorgeous, and had brown dreadlocks that spilled to mid-back.
Jade's eyes widened. Despite the large hip-hop style clothes, there was evidence of curves and a decent-sized bosom under the graffiti t-shirt.
She realized she was staring and lowered her face with a blush.
"Josie, you want to go to the Lucas party tonight?" a boy to the gorgeous girl's right inquired.
Tall, gorgeous and dreadlocked didn't even pause mid-stride; Josie crooked an impish sort of glance at the bleached blond on her right.
"Is there beer?"
"Yes-"
"And that's the answer," Josie decided, with a winning smile that was a dart lodged in Jade's ribcage, a glimpse into why the girl was the sun center of a now-dreary room.
She was approaching Jade with unfaltering strides, making her look up from her phone.
"So, where is he?" Josie asked.
-------------------------------
The third cheerleading practice aligned with football tryouts and Josie strongly suspected that Alycia, one of her minions and the cliche girlfriend of the quarterback, had planned it that way. They spent more of their time watching the boys make their way out to the field than practice any cheers.
Even if josie wasn't interested in ogling the ridiculous beefcakes on the field, she could appreciate anything that meant she wasn't obligated to fake a smile and chant some inane rhyme about school spirit.
Alycia hadn't even noticed yet that Josie was reading instead of cheering, completely ignoring everything around her.
Until " He is here!" Jade gasped.
Josie's head snapped up without her permission. On the football field, lined up between all the hulking guys trying out of the team was tiny 6 foot 2 Ethan in practice gear with a helmet under his arm; a look of raw determination on his face as he pointedly ignored the whispers all around him.
'Oh no, he's hot'
The thought was dangerous. An open flame to a drum of gasoline that had already been teetering dangerously, threatening to spill its noxious liquids all over the ground. Josie had always known the captain of the football team would be attractive. Wasn't it a prerequisite for the job?
'Great with balls, capable hands, good looks so American they would make the founding fathers weep'
He filled each requirement the same way he was currently filling the athletic shirt he wore. Adequately and much to Josie's satisfaction.
“What's his name again?” Josie asked standing with hands on her hips
“Ethan”
"Girls. Ready for plan A!" Josie said with smirk
-------------------------------
“Class we have a new transferred student here from California” Mr. Dorian addressed
“Hello, Ethan. Glad to have you in class”
Ethan mumbled something and Mr. Dorian being Mr. Dorian asked him to tell the class about himself.
He looked Mr. Dorian and then looked around as if he was searching for someone.
“Maybe some other time”
Mr.Dorian told him to take sit and he took a sit on Jade's left.
“Can you help me?” he asked innocently
“No”
“Can we talk. Please”
Jade didn't respond and turned her attention towards her book.
After the classes were finished for the day. Ethan took it as the chance to talk to Jade. He find her really beautiful and hot. She was standing in hallway talking with someone. He approached her and tried to initiate a conversation.
“Ahm. Hi” Jade rolled her eyes at him
“What do you want?”
“I- you look pretty. And I just-”
“I don't have time you see. I need to get somewhere. So get to point, will you”
“Oh yeah ofcourse. Ahm. So there this party tonight. So I was thinking if you would, you know if you would like to come wi-”
“If I were you I wouldn't finish that sentence” they heard someone from behind them.
“Hey. Josie” Jade was smiling like a fool after seeing Josie. Josie hugged jade and kissed her cheek with a matching smile on her face. She then turned her attention towards new boy.
“Hi. I'm new here. My name is Ethan” he took his hand out for a shake which was not so subtly ignored by Josie.
“Does it look I care. Anyways. Jade for party I think we should definitely go for black. I know its classic but it looks hot. So what do you say?”
“As you wish” Jade kissed Josie's cheek.
