Adina's POV
Selectives. Descendants of Humans. The humans who survived the collision ensured the human race carried on even after the event. The generation that followed the Ancient Survivors were the first Selectives. Two generations later that's what we call ourselves still. Well some of us.
Maybe an explanation is needed. See, Central Point is divided into two halves: Eastern CP and Western CP. They are divided by a wide river (wide enough to take a boat a good 20 minutes to cross), a thick, dense and large forest, with creatures beyond anyone's wildest imaginations, on either side of the river and a scorching and large desert that follows the forest on the Western side of the river.
Easterners believe that we are Selectives. Some believe we were descendants of some lucky people, others say it was natural selection that allowed our ancestors to live, hence the name Selectives. They say that we therefore aren't truly human. In a way they are right. I mean we have two arms and two legs. Two ears and two eyes. A nose and a mouth. We are human. But we each have abilities.
There are five basic abilities:
Mind readers and emotion feelers. These people can read all your most inner and deepest thoughts in a couple of seconds just by making direct eye contact with you. If not this, just by laying a hand on your direct skin, they can tell all your emotions that you are feeling, have felt the previous day, and some say they can feel what you will feel the next day. They can also tell if you are lying by using their abilities. I think they are the most dangerous. They take you to this place a vulnerability and rawness and they can then exploit that. I guess that's why they are our leaders. Royals, if you will. There are five Royal houses. Alpha (the Leaders of leaders: the first house), Delta, Zeta, Iota and Lamda.
Next, shapeshfiters. These people have the ability to change the physical appearance to something else. What you change into depends on your personality. The best can take someone else's form and face, some change into wolf, tiger or panther. Others change into some sort of beast. One thing is for sure, they each become super strong, super fast creatures with heightened senses. This is why they are our warriors, soldiers and Royal ground guards. They strike fear into hearts and no one dares to pass them. They too have five houses. Grey (First house), Bolt, Storm, Thunder and Lightning.
Then you have the Invisibility crew. Most are Royal spies, agents and cops. Besides invisibility, some tend to be able to teleport and some have indestructibility abilities. But what makes them suited so well to their jobs are their ability to see things others miss. A vision for fine detail, for picking up of heat signatures and some even have X-Ray vision. If they don't work for the Royal houses, they lead absolutely normal lives. Becoming teachers of our history or coaches to help young ones control their abilities. They live scattered in towns and cities. Places where 'normal' life happens. They live with the healer and wielders.
Healers and Wielders. The next group of Selectives. Healers have always fascinated me. How wonderful must it be to be able to to cure someone who is in fatal condition. Wielders don't lack in amazement either. Being able to control wind, water, fire or earth. Pretty amazing. They refer to themselves as 'Town's people' as they live normal lives as Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers and Chefs etc. When I was younger I asked my mom why I couldn't be part of the 'Town's people'. Why I couldn't have a normal job. She comforted me by telling me that they might live a mundane life but if a war against Westerners has to arise they will be on the front lines like all of us, helping, because they too are pledged to the Royals. So at the end of the day we will all do the same job anyway.
Then the Flyers. My people. The eyes and ears in the sky. Royal Air Force. Personal bodyguards to the Royals as they might need a quick escape at any time. People are intrigued by our large wings that extend far past our shoulders and easily fold back on our backs. When folded they make trace patterns on our backs. Each individual has a different pattern, like a fingerprint. Wings are either grey black or white. Mine are white. We too have five houses. Zircon (first house), Topez, Amethyst, Sapphire and Emerald.
I am from House Zircon. My father is brother to the Head of the house. Second in command, if you will. My older brother, Logan, will take his place when Cousin Liam takes over from my uncle as head of the house. Everyone in the family has a place and a job with its tasks. Have their lives figured out. Not me, I don't know my place and how I fit into the picture. Sure my life has plans, but it just doesn't feel like my plans. It feels like it's my family's plan for me. My grandmother says it's okay to take time finding yourself. Mom on the other hand, says I have a duty to the throne and performing that duty is my life's goal, like it or not.
I guess that's why I spend most of my time at my sanctuary. It's the only place that seems to make me feel in place.
Now, on the other hand. The Westerners. They believe we are humans. We aren't selected and the abilities of Easterners are just a genetic anomaly. That we are disabled and abnormal. They say the only reason our ancestors survived was because they were at the right place at the right time during the collision. They are closest to what humans use to be, with exception. It is said that they have perception unlike any before them and that they are quick and decisive and skilled in combat, so much so that it causes doubt amongst some of us that Easterners will actually win a war against Westerners.
