Adina' POV

Right now, Levi and I and all other inductees of Duty Day are standing just outside the main hall in the Royal Alpha House, waiting to be called and to be assigned a duty. Each of us are standing in the uniforms according to our abilities, wearing a sash with the name of our houses written in the colours of our houses. Levi and I are wearing the flyers uniform. Gold and white, derived from the uniform of pilots of the past. We each have a captain hat on and my long, thick, brown hair is in a lace braid. Levi sash is green for Emerald House, while mine is light blue for Zircon House. We are the only two flyers getting inducted this year. He seems super excited.

"Think about it like this. Once we get through this, we get ready for our big day," he told me all excited on our way to the Royal house. I gave him a smile, hiding the fact that I just had a bad feeling about all this.

"Samuel Hayes of Thunder House. Shapeshifter and Ground Security. I induct thee into the Royal service and give thee the charge of guarding the perimeter of House Zeta, making sure there is adequate traps and alarms to catch any person with evil intent to any Royal from Zeta House," Alexander Alpha, leader of all, spoke. Samuel got a good position to start off with. I'm sure when the head of security of Zeta House goes to retire, Sam will take over. I know Sam from training, but because we have different abilities we didn't really see each other out of practice and didn't really hangout.

Next is Levi's turn. He turns to me and give me one last heart-warming smile.

"Levi Jackson, of Emerald House. Flyer and Personal Bodyguard. I induct thee into the Royal service and charge thee as personal protector of my youngest daughter, Eva," Alexander Alpha spoke and I was shocked. He whispered something into Levi' s ear to which Levi nodded and walked into stage. Why would he give Levi the personal bodyguard duty. Normally that duty is given to Flyers with more experience. And I would think he would want that to be the case, especially in this case, seen as it is his youngest daughter. Weird. Well good luck Levi.

"Adina Hudson, of Zircon House. Flyer and Personal Bodyguard. I induct thee into the Royal service and charge thee as personal protector of my oldest daughter and heir to Alpha House, Sophia," Alexander Alpha spoke and mentioned me to come toward him.

What. The. Hell. This is a huge task. I can't be charged with Sophia. She is the next heir to being Leader of leaders. If I mess up, I die. Literally.

When I reach Alexander Alpha, he whispers in my ear, "Don't ever let her be harmed or you won't live to even regret it. I'm counting on you."

His statement sent shivers down my spine, putting me on edge more than ever.

The rest on the inductions was background noise to my ears as I suddenly left incompetent and more anxious than ever. Levi kept throwing me smiles of encouragement, but that didn't stop my heart from beating a thousand miles per hour.

We took our oaths and slit our hands letting our blood drop into graphite bowls marked with names and colours of the House we were about to serve. My mind was racing so fast, the sting of the cut felt like that butterfly that passed my eye, quick and fleeting. I watched as my blood began to set in the Alpha House bowl. Lying still whereas it felt like the blood in my body was shaking with anxiety. I watched as a Mind Reader and Elder of Alpha House came to my bowl and whispered Sophia's name into my blood followed by the words "Protecting her will run in your veins as your blood ran into this bowl".

I heard about Elder Alpha before. Apparently she was the elder aunt of Alexander Alpha and spent years in a cave after her husband died. She didnt have any children or her oldest child would have been leader now. They say she mastered her abilities so well in that cave that you couldn't fully describe what the full extent of those abilities were. I believed it, but not as much as I do now, because after hearing her words all I can think of is protecting Sophia. It's in my blood.

The ceremony soon came to an end and Levi and I headed to my house. My parents invited all Flyers to celebrate our induction. All houses are here. Members of different houses are coming to us one by one congratulating us, giving us some 'words of advice' and offering gifts and good luck wishes. Levi can't stop speaking about his duty and how he was so shocked but so happy with his task. He speaks about the warning that Alexander Alpha gave him if he failed to protect his daughter, one similar to mine. He laughs about how his heart almost stopped. I add in a few words in and there but I still have that daunting feeling I had earlier. I thought it would disappear after I was given my task but alas no.

I see my uncle in the distance and I excuse myself from Levi and his company, all Flyers that will turn nineteen in the next two or three years. I rush towards my uncle to ask the question that has been bothering me for a long time.

"Uncle William," I call out as I reach him and he turns to face me.

"Adina, congratulations with the task you were given. Pretty important, don't you think. Then again you are Niece in the First Flyer house, you do need an important task," he says and I realise now why I got Sophia and not Levi since he was older than me.

"Uncle, actually I wanted to ask something about my task. How is it that Levi and I got such important tasks? Shouldn't we have gotten beginner tasks and our tasks be given to more experienced Flyers?," I quickly ask.

Uncle lets out a Ah sound and says, "Well ever since Elder Alpha came back from the cave last year, she has been advising Alexander Alpha on what she thinks would be best to ensure that people train their abilities further and better. She thought that a bond between Mind Reader and her Flyer should start off at an early age and this way the the Mind reader also doesn't change Bodyguards all the time. She believes this will allow them to develop their abilities together and faster. Hence, newly inducted Flyers are given a young Royal that they will forever protect."

"So I won't go up in rank of task?," I ask. Usually you get a beginning task and move your way up everytime there is a new inductee.

My uncle gives a small laugh and says, "You got one of the highest jobs a second child niece can get and you want to rank up. I'm afraid you will have to kill your brother if you want to rank up." I know he says all this as a joke but it wasn't funny.

"How long have you known?," I ask again.

"Why all the questions, Adina. You are over thinking. Just enjoy the party," he says as he takes a finger food from the buffet table, "And to answer your question, I knew for a while. Maybe over a year."

"And you didn't tell us?," I ask as he begins to walk away. Maybe I would feel more prepared and I wouldn't have this sickening gut feeling if I knew what task to expect.

"It was a surprise!," He yells out before disappearing into the crowd.

And just like that my stomach drops further than before and it felt like I was about to be stabbed with a dagger.
