Maia was quiet the whole ride back to the mansion in the woods she called home. What was there to talk about? Namjoon was always so secretive and she figured she shouldn't bring up the over-heard conversation. Eventually, the man asked her if she enjoyed her time in town and as always, Maia responded the same.
Yes, she enjoyed it. Thank you for allowing her to accompany him. And other such things she's been wired to say. Namjoon nodded, it didn't make much difference to him whether she enjoyed it or not, he just needed her to stay content for the time being.
Maia looked down at the hands placed in her lap. Darkened spots painted her delicate wrists.
Bruises? Maia's brow furrowed as she wondered how she could have acquired such nasty things, considering she doesn't do anything physically taxing. Before she could draw a weak conclusion, Namjoon cleared his throat, causing Maia to look up from her inspection just in time to see Namjoon meet her eyes. He noticed them too.
"Is there something wrong, Maia?" His dark eyes never wavered, nor did the sternness in his voice. She opened her mouth, but then closed it.
Was there something wrong?
She had to think about it. The bruises, her wrists, the pain in her-
"Is there Maia?" Namjoon demanded more forcefully.
Eventually, Maia shook her head, letting the matter drop. No, there was nothing wrong.
Memory forgotten. Bury it deep.
"Good, good." Namjoon faced forward in his seat once more, but continued to speak, "I hope you didn't gorge yourself on sweets in the bakery. Hannah will have lunch ready at home."
Maia assured him that she didn't and that she'd eat her lunch with an unhindered appetite.
Pleased with this answer, Namjoon responded, "Good, we need you healthy."
Whether it was said on purpose so that Maia may become aware of a foreshadowed future or if it was a blunder upon Namjoon's part, it left Maia to wonder.
Who was we?
Darkness, shadows, all aspects of the night manipulated around him with no apprehension. It was his element. It made him who he was. It gave him comfort, strength, and power. He hummed, it was a soft melody that was relaxing to him, but it served another purpose as well. Each time he hummed, vibrations bounced off of the objects around the pitch black room in which he sat. Those same vibrations came back to him, alerting him of every single presence in the room. He could see in the dark, without even opening his eyes. It wasn't much but the covering of shadows was all he had. It was the only thing that could help him block out the whimpers of those neighboring him. And the screams of the one that comes only at night. His only friend was the darkness which consumed his thoughts and even his body. It was his blanket of security.
It was the cause of his Euphoria.
Time Skip
Maia was woken suddenly from her slumber by God knows what. She groggily rubbed her eyes and looked around the dark room. Rain pounded hard against the glass window as the moonlight streamed in lighting only a portion of the room. Reaching for her bedside table, she groped around until her fingers grazed the small pack of matches kept there at all times. She struck once, then twice, finally able to light the little stick and transferred the flame too the thin white candle resting in a golden candle holder. Comforted by the small amount of illumination offered by the lit wax she was able to lean back against the head board and relax a little.
Odd, she thought.
Her throat felt sore. Maia swallowed in an attempt to soothe her esophagus with saliva, but with no avail. Giving up, she reached back over to the bedside table and grabbed the glass of water waiting for her. It was soothing, but not nearly enough, as she could practically feel it pulsating. Pulling back the covers, Maia slipped on her slippers and grabbed the candle, rising to her feet. She knew Hannah kept medicine in a cabinet in the kitchen. Perhaps she could find some throat lozenges. This has happened before, Namjoon says that it is caused by allergies.
Pulling open the door, a sudden chill ran down Maia's spine. Not caused by the sight of the dark and empty hallway in front of her. But a now detected presence behind her. The sudden feeling of being watched was far too great to ignore and she turned to face her bedroom once more.
There it was. Floating in front of the window as the moonlight outlined its silhouette, a floating grey mist. The same as before, but in the eerie moonlight it was definitely more distinguishable. Maia stumbled backwards, as it caught her off guard. Regaining her balance, she realized that not only did it really exist, but whatever it was seemed to be observing her. Maia cocked her head to the side, not sure whether she should be curious or afraid. Hesitantly, she lifted the candle, hoping to see if the creature had any visible features. None that she could see, she was about to speak when suddenly, a light sound tickled her ears. She couldn't quite describe it, nor had she ever experienced anything similar. Maia startled once more when she notice the figure began to sway methodically back and forth. Allowing her curiosity to get the best of her, she cautiously approached the thing, making note of its current state.
Was it perhaps in a trance?
As she approached, she realized that not only was the creature causing her ears to vibrate, but it was making a sound similar to a person humming. Maia wasn't quite sure if this was to soothe itself or just a normal thing that it did. But whatever it was seemed to have put it in a trance like state. When the girl was only a few paces away, the creature abruptly ceased all movements. No more sound was being made.
Nothing.
Maia was a bit concerned, wondering if she had done something wrong.
"H-Hello?" Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
What happened next, scared her immensely. The shadowy void suddenly began to morph making way for two pit like holes.
Eyes.
Maia stares wide eyed at the creature wondering if she should start running or call for Namjoon. Deciding to retreat, she turned in her heels, but not before overhearing something bone chilling.
"I....CAN....SEE...YOU..."
