PEARLS
~✰ ✰ ✰~
The next morning I woke up from a restless nights sleep. My mind was clouded by the thoughts of Jack Kelly, the paper boy. His charming smile and the way his fingers carefully wrapped around the pencil. Every time I thought of the boy I had to tell myself not to. A girl like me could not be with a guy like him. And even though I barley knew him, he intrigued me in such a way.
I was tying my hair back when the phone rang from my bedside table. Stabbing myself with a pin, I cursed under my breath.
"Hello?" I asked putting the sleek black phone to my ear.
"Lilly!" Kathrines voice said excitedly through the line. "I have a story, a real one wanna come help me?"
"Yeah sure, when and where?" I asked trying to place the last pin in my hair.
"Jacobis Deli, one o'clock." She told me.
"Got it, see ya then." I said before hanging up. I glanced at the pearls on my desk. I shook my head The red dress I had on made my hair look lighter. My green eyes sparkled. Approving the way I looked I left my house and headed down the street. I had never been to Jacobis Deli but I had heard good things from Kathrine. When I opened the door to the small Deli the bell chimed. I noticed Kathrine was already standing in the center of the room. When the bell chimed everyone turned to look at me. My heart thudded loudly in my ears as my eyes scanned the dumbfounded faces of the newsies.
"Well what's everyone looking at?" I asked, my eye brow quirked. Kathrine smiled at me. I made my way over to where she stood next to Jack.
"What're you doin here?" Jack asked the corners of his lips upturning slightly.
"Asking a question." I told him bluntly.
"Oh is that all?" He asked sidling up to me. He batted his lashes. I scoffed, ignoring the way my arm heated up at his touch.
"No she's helping me." Kathrine piped up. Jack frowned looking at her.
"You still never answered my question, why is everyone so scared of Brooklyn?" Kathrine sat down on a table. Pulling out her pen and paper.
"Brooklyn's the 6th largest city in the entire world. You got Brooklyn you hit the motherlode." Jack explained. "Ya know for someone who works for the New York Sun, you spend an awful lot of time hanging around The World." Kathrine swallowed nervously. "And for someone who don't even work for a paper, you seem to be around an awful lot. So what's that about? You followin me?" He asked walking around me. All the boys laughed and my face flushed.
"N-No" I stuttered.
"The only thing I'm following is a story." Kathrine told him with an eye roll. "A rag-tag game of rag muffins what's to take on the kingmakers of New York. Think you have a chance?" Kathrine asked slyly. Jack scoffed.
