Sophie's grip tightened, her tears turning into violent sobs.
She wept until her body trembled from the act, hands shaking and dropping limp into her lap.
She didn't speak, and the silence was broken first by Wylie.
"I'm sorry." The apology was spoken in a whisper, barely stirring the air in case it set off another round of tears.
Still, she didn't utter a word, and only sat there with her face still buried in his shoulder.
What felt like twenty minutes passed before Sophie breathed, "You're lying."
She could feel him shake his head from above, holding on to her so she wouldn't keel over, and she heard him quietly apologize once more.
"Okay," she whispered back, her wavering voice lost somewhere in the folds of his clothes, and her eyes drifted close.

She dreamt of a smiling blond boy, ice-colored eyes nearly closed from the wide grin. He laughed, voice like music to her ears, and ran a hand through his already messy hair. Of course, his tunic wasn't any neater, but it held an admirable charm.
He stood close, and lowered a shimmering necklace over her head.
It was a lovely silver locket made of glass beads, resembling a small flower, painted a beautiful light blue.
He stepped back, his robes dancing in the wind, and the stunning blue eyes never left hers.
"You'll never lose me. No matter how all this stuff goes down."
His voice was incredibly soft, maybe even sweet. His long, dark lashes fluttered close, and he held out his arms as if reaching for one last embrace.
"Thanks, Foster," he whispered, his tone almost teasing but not quite. "Thanks for never hating me."
She let out a pleading cry, reaching for him too, running into his outstretched arms.
But the wind turned into an angry flame, burning between them, and he was gone before she ever fell into his arms.
Sophie felt around on the barren ground, a sob clawing at her throat, feeling only empty air and burnt blades of grass between her fingers, until she touched something warm and solid.
It was a silver, half-melted pin she recognized as Krakie.
She clasped her hands around it, almost in prayer, and held it to close to her heart.
Her eyes flooded with tears, and she clutched the pin even tighter, as if that would disappear too.
A loud wail finally teared through her chest, and she screamed until her lungs burned and the fire took her too.

Sophie fell into the cold, dark depths.
She kept falling, and falling, and falling, never hitting the ground, falling with no end in sight.
It felt like drowning. The dark was suffocating her, breath reaching to an end, choking her and pulling her deeper into the freezing waters.
It was like she'd never learned how to swim. Or maybe, she didn't want to.
