Diagon Alley was amazing. Students buzzed around, eating sweets and buying pranks from Ron's brothers' shop. Sophie tried to take it all in, but Harry wanted to get her to the wand shop quickly.
"Here it is, Ollivander's. You're going to like him, he's very nice"
Harry led Sophie inside and the bell jingled behind them.
A voice from behind the towering stacks of wand said, "Who is it?"
"Harry Potter!" Harry shouted.
An old man stumbled through the wands and shook Harry's hand, "Oh Harry! Great to see you. How can I help you today?"
"I need you to get my......... girlfriend a wand. This is Sophie"
Sophie blushed from the word girlfriend and Ollivander winked at them. He eyed her up and down and then chose a slender wand the color of moonlight, "Try this"
Sophie waved it around like Ollivander instructed her, but nothing happened.
"No worries, often takes a wizard or witch a few tries"
Sophie believed him, but a small part of her head wondered if maybe she would never have a wand because she was an elf.
Her next wand was shorter and made of a dark wood. Again, nothing. Soon Sophie had tried eleven wands.
Ollivander smiled nervously, "How about one more?"
As soon as the man left, Sophie bolted down the street. Harry called after her, but the thought of more clues telling her she would never belong scared her. She never belonged anywhere, to anything.
An unshakable feeling of helplessness filled her and Sophie dove behind an alley before she could inflict. She ran until she was positive no one would be hurt by her.
Sophie slumped against the wall, tears streaming down her cheeks. She would trade anything to be a witch. Not just for Harry though, she realized. For the chance to be some type of normal. To no longer be different.
It was dark when Harry found her and Sophie felt hollow inside. Her dreams of staying at Hogwarts melted away like mallowmelts.
Harry sat her down on her bed, "Look, Sophie. It's going to be alright. We can do this, together"
"I don't belong anywhere" Sophie sniffled.
"Wrong! You belong with me"
Harry scooped her up and kissed her. Sophie smiled and kissed him back.
"Ewwwwww. Jeez, a warning would have been nice mate"
Ron stood in the doorway, his face scrunched up in disgust. Harry and Sophie looked at each and laughed. At least they would always have each other, Sophie thought.
The night was spent mulling over the siren song. Ron offered some ideas, but none of them made sense. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door quietly. Harry opened it up to see Cedric standing there.
"Hello Cedric" Harry said stiffly.
"Look, you seem like a nice person Harry. And it's not fair if all the other champions know and you don't. I feel obligated to let you know. The challenge is going to be underwater. You'll need to find a way to breathe for at least an hour. Good luck. To you both"
Cedric stared Sophie in the eyes before leaving Sophie and Harry queasy.
"An hour?" Harry'a voice wavered.
"Relax, I can teach you what I learned at Exillium"
"Exillium?"
Sophie stuttered, "Uhhhh, just forget about it. Here, just follow what I do. Relax your body"
Sophie dunked her head into the bucket of water next to the fireplace. She held it for a while before coming up.
"Now you try. And don't forget to move your body to distract yourself"
Harry tried, but as hard as he practiced, he couldn't even last a minute.
Harry ran a hand through his hair, "Look, I'll find another way. You should keep practicing, I...... have to go"
Sophie protested, but Harry was already gone. She dried off her hair and changed for the night. Sophie hugged Ella and forced herself to trust Harry. He would figure it out, but Sophie was going to make sure that at all costs he survived.
