I should've known it the second we parked the car in front of the four storey mansion. The line of security along the whole property should have given it away but I still let the man standing at the entrance tell me I couldn't bring my bodyguard inside.
"Sorry Mrs McKenzie, but those are the orders I received. If you'd like I can call the boss" His hand has already travelled up to the bluetooth headset he's wearing.
"That won't be necessary" I quickly try to stop him. I wasn't trying to avoid Logan but at the same time I wasn't prepared to face him right now. And to think that he had to be called here just so I could bring Seth with me, would probably just piss him off. I didn't want that kind of trouble on my hands tonight so I ask Seth to go back home, considering there isn't much he can do while I'm inside.
And of course he had turned me down, which made me question who works for who.
So here I am standing in the corner of a ballroom that held probably three hundred more people apart from me. By my rough estimate, that is, although I wouldn't be surprised if the number exceeds my guess. Everyone was dressed up to the occasion, and all of a sudden I didn't feel that awkward in the red gown I adorned, in fact I blended in perfectly.
I turn my attention from the elegant men and women around me towards the interior of this place. The semi-circular room had its walls completely composed of glass that ran up all way to the ceiling, giving you the perfect view of the backyard, with an infinity pool right in the centre and a clear sky above. I could already imagine how beautiful it would look during daytime. Eight pillars stood holding the weight of the floor above us and along them ran a series of circular tables, big enough to only accommodate a couple of people. A move that I'm pretty sure Elon had intentionally devised. Now that I take in the dance floor in the centre with a giant chandelier to emphasize it, the overall picture of this looks more like a party Elon planned for himself rather than his brother.
There's no fucking way, he's going to want to be a part of this. Which brings me to an abrupt realization. Is he even here? Did Elon lie to me?
It didn't make sense for him to play me. I had absolutely nothing to offer him and there's only one way to find out his intentions. Find one of the two brothers, which seems like an impossible task given the swarm of masked people.
You could always call him.
I pull out my phone from the tiny clutch that could only hold my phone and a lipstick along with a couple of credit cards, squished tightly into one of the compartments. My fingers hover over his name as I bite my bottom lip. I could call him and end these stupid thoughts bustling through my brain. I had a shitload of files awaiting my attention back home and the sooner I expose the truth behind this party, the sooner I can get back to work. The only problem to that? I didn't want to call him, if this really is a scheme Elon's trying to play at me, Logan wouldn't be here and I'd end up embarrassing myself for asking in the first place.
Why did I care so much about that? I have zero fucking clue. I don't even know why I've been avoiding him? It's not like we fought over something. So why did I choose to ignore the two phone calls he made my way during the past month?
As I stand there, staring at his name, a surge of realization hits me straight in the gut. I was indeed pissed at him for never coming to get me. I mean he did say he would come for me, is seven months not long enough for him?
I frown at how immature I sounded but I did nothing to school my feelings, instead I shove the phone back into my clutch. With the goal of finding my brother-in-law I leave the ballroom, prepared to go through every possible door that this mansion has. Luckily for me, the two men manning a door at the very end of the hallway, give me a sign and I make my way towards it. Had they not been standing there, I would've easily missed the white double doors as they get camouflaged with the walls.
That made me wonder what was actually happening inside? The two men give me a stern look at first and only when I make them aware of who I am, do they fumble to open it without further argument. Inside is what appears to be some sort of a game room, with everything that a man could possibly want, a pool table, a couple of gaming consoles with a large projector screen attached to them and right in the middle of it all stood a poker table.
My gaze lies on the baize top with chips stacked on it, before settling on the four men that sat around it with their respective arm candies. Although their faces are covered by masks, I'd clearly see the glare they were passing my way. Like I'm interrupting a really good round. My eyes land on one man in particular, the one wearing a burgundy tweed suit and waistcoat, paired with a white button down shirt and a dark navy, almost black tie. He watches me with a piercing gaze and I nearly mistake him for Logan, that's until the blonde beside him puts her hand on his shoulder.
That can't be him.
The man on his other side was definitely Elon and I try to find my voice, ask him to meet me outside. Instead I end up apologizing. "Sorry for interrupting" My throat is dry, as if I've been walking in a desert for days without water.
I'm out of there the very next second, heading straight for the bar. I let the wave of disappointment sink in before ordering a shot.
"That's as far as my anger could take me" I groan out to absolutely no one in particular.
The bartender puts up my shot and I release a sigh before downing it and ordering another one.
"On the bright side I get to go home and dig into those files" I don't know what exactly is causing me to speak out to myself, maybe it's the music that easily fades away my voice or the fact that no one is listening.
"It's such a shame to see a gorgeous woman drink alone at a party" Comes a crisp voice, I angle my head just a little to watch him from the corner of my eye. He's wearing an all black suit, his jacket having intricate embroidery on it.
"Yeah and now she's about to leave" I huff, hopping off the stool, grabbing my clutch from the bar counter.
"Or I can fix this whole situation by buying you a drink. Just like old times" He doesn't try to grab me or even attempt to block my way, like how all those men before have done. And it's because of that, I turn to face him, "I have to go but thank you"
"The party has just started" His eyes stare me down but not in a harmful way.
"It's got nothing to offer to me" I reply in all honesty.
"Will I sound like a creep if I say, I can easily change that for you?" He inquires and I laugh out, "Yes a little creepy"
"Can I at least know your name?" He takes a quick sip of his drink.
I should probably tell him that I'm married and that whatever he's planning on can't happen. But he seems harmless and if he's just trying to be nice, I look like one of those girls that think every guy in the world is after them. I give him the benefit of the doubt, trying not to be an asshole.
"Elora—" Whoa.
My eyes widen, no one knew my birth name apart from my family. And I never introduced myself with it either, so why did I say that out loud?
"Mrs McKenzie, looking ravishing as ever" Logan's voice cuts through the music and my mental battle. The guy at the bar fixes his gaze behind me and I turn around to find the man from the game room, his burgundy suit a perfect match to my dress. Coincidence? Anger swirls deep inside my body, consuming me inch by inch as I picture the woman from before and her hand on his shoulder.
"My apologies but I need to have a word with my wife" He states in a not so sorry tone, his arm wrapping itself around my back. In one swift move he pulls me flush against his rock hard chest, his eyes trying to warn the man whose name I hadn't even learnt.
He had to be kidding me.
"By all means" I turn my neck, a small smile plastered on my lips but he doesn't return the favour and just watches me with his dark gaze. I allow Logan to guide me away, my fist clench tight, ready to give him a piece of my mind.
