I woke up extra early today so that i could prepare a grand breakfast today for Pawan. God knew how irritated he became when his routine was shaken up. And Simmi coming to Pune and staying with us would really cause his routine to go haywire.
Although Simmi would only be here in the morning and night since she would have work the whole day, I still felt compelled to ask Pawan if Simmi could stay with us for the weekend.
Although, I had already demanded her that she stayed with us.... what would I tell her if Pawan refused?
I hummed while i busied myself in the kitchen. Cholle bhature... Pawan loved them. I always made them when I wanted his permission to do something...
I looked at the time and hurried to make tea. He will be up anytime now.
I climbed the stairs to our bedroom with the hot tea in my hand and the day's newspaper still rolled up in my hand.
"Pawan?" I softly called out, when i saw him turn around in sleep. "Your tea." I kept it on his side table and proceeded to draw the curtains aside to allow the morning sun to stream inside. From the corner of my eyes i saw Pawan sit up on the bed and taking a sip of the tea.
"Mmhmmm." He made a noise in his throat. "What's for breakfast?"
That's it. No good morning Meera. No how are you Meera? No it's such a beautiful day, want me to skip office today? Now that I think about it, he never really ditched office to spend time with me... It has always been work work and work for him.
"Your favourite, cholle bhature." I stand beside the bed.
"Anything special today?" He asked, obviously confused. I only cooked this meal on special days. Pawan had always demanded that special dishes and sweets only be prepared on special days, otherwise we won't learn to value them.
Absolutely bullshit.
If we like something, we should be allowed to have it anytime we want.
"No," i forced a smile, "just wanted to prepare your favourite dish today."
"You know Meera what i say about—"
"Yes Pawan,"
"Fine," he grumbled, "I'll let it slide this once."
I quickly set the table after that and called him down.
He checked his mails while I placed a little of everything on his plate.
He couldn't even even use his own bloody hands to serve himself.
What is wrong with me? I never had any problem with doing all his work, but lately it had been annoying me a lot. He never helped me in any house work and whenever I bring this up he would very indignantly assert that since he was the one who was the bread earner of the family, I shouldn't have any problem in doing the house work. And if i needed help, i could keep an extra maid.
He never even thanked me for doing his work. Ugghh.
He took the first bite and i smiled inwardly. I knew what his reaction would be. He moaned a little and smiled, "You're such an amazing cook Meera. This is absolutely delicious!"
I smiled graciously. Atleast he praised me time and again. "Thank you Pawan. Have some of these onions too," i offered.
I sat down on the table while he scarfed his favourite food down and I nervously clenched and unclenched my fingers under the table. "I was thinking..." i murmured.
