MAGDALENA'S POV
The next day I can't stop thinking about Dana. I sit in my room trying to draw him from memory. I even try to Google him but I don't know his last name. Why is this boy consuming my thoughts when I just met him yesterday? I wonder what school he goes to? He looks about my age so I'm assuming he goes to a high school near by. He probably goes t- My thoughts are interrupted by the front door of the apartment opening and closing. I hear a crash then some giggling. I roll my eyes. My mom is home surprisingly. I get up from my bed and stand in the doorway. I hear my mom loudly whispering. Who is she talking to? Then I hear a male voice. I walk down the hallway to get a better look. I see my mom and some guy clinging to each other as they walk towards me, a stumbling and giggling mess.
"Mom?" I say.
She looks up at me, her smile fading.
"Ugh not you again. What do you want this time? Food?" She asks sarcastically. The man snickers.
"Well yeah some dinner would be nice." I retort.
"I don't know! Go eat some cereal or something! God, Magda you act like I'm your mother." She huffs.
"You are my mother!" I exclaim trying to choke back the tears, it's no use. They pour steadily down my cheeks.
"Yeah well..." My mom takes the man's hand and goes into to her room, slamming the door shut.
I am in disbelief and a little disgusted. Wiping my eyes, I go back to my room to get my phone, my key to the apartment, and a jacket. I do not want to be here when noises start to arise.
***I start to walk down the sidewalk gazing at the shops and houses. I see a family walking on the opposite side of the sidewalk. There is a mother, father, sister, and brother. They are all laughing and holding hands. I cross my arms and look up at the sky, trying to keep my tears from falling again. Why did I get stuck with such a crappy family? No more like a crappy parent. What did I even do to deserve this life? I would do anything to have a normal family. With a mom who doesn't drink, a father who cares about his own daughter and maybe even a sister or brother.
I continue to walk. I have no idea where I'm going, I just need to clear my head. I get to the downtown part of Santa Monica. It's starting to get dark, so this part of town is pretty busy. I walk through the crowded sidewalks, mindlessly swerving people walking the opposite direction. As I pass the parking lot of Taco Bell, I hear feet jogging up behind me. I am surprised to see Dana jogging up to me.
"Hey." He says as he reaches me. He has on a black jacket, grey pants, and a black and grey snap back with shoes to match.
"Hi." I say shyly.
"Magdalena right?" He asks. I nod.
"Remember me? I'm Dana. My friend almost hit you with a volleyball yesterday."
"Yeah I remember you."
"Cool. So what are you doing down here?"
"I just went for a walk and I ended up here I guess." I say looking at the ground, smiling. "What about you?"
"I'm out with my friends David and Gabe."
"Cool." This conversation is so awkward. Why am I acting so shy?
"So listen you seem like a really cool person and I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime to get to know each other better?" Dana asks.
My heart stopped. Did he just ask me out? I think he did! Oh my god Dana just asked me out! I wanted to scream 'YES' but instead I took a couple deep breathes and say,
"Sure that'd be great."
Dana smiles and looks relieved. We exchange information.
"Well gotta go." He says. "I'll text you!"
