Practice the day after the party goes surprisingly well: no one seems too hungover, Jungkook and Taehyung are getting along better than ever, and Seokjin and Yoongi are in such a good mood that Taehyung is convinced they finally hooked up.

By the time they wrap up, everyone is dripping sweat and well prepared for tomorrow’s game, which brings up the issue of who’ll be the temporary captain and if the two ex-enemies are even allowed to play.

Thankfully they don’t have to wait too long because Seokjin pulls them off to the side after everyone else has headed to the locker room.

“Listen, I’m really proud of you two for the progress you’ve made.” He starts, hands on his hips in a relaxed authoritative manner. “You’ve shown me you’re both capable of putting aside your personal issues for the sake of the team and that type of dedication and selflessness can make for a great captain.” Taehyung perks up, anticipating the coach's next words. “So, I just want to make sure that this is the real deal, and you’re not gonna go back to fighting as soon as the captain position is finalized.”

Taehyung glances excitedly over at Jungkook and tosses an arm around the younger’s sweaty shoulders. “I promise it’s 100%, definitely, for sure, a change that’s here to stay. We’re good now, right Jungkookie?”

Jungkook stiffens (from the arm on his shoulders or the sudden nickname, Taehyung doesn’t know). “So good.” He smiles.

Seokjin takes a moment to look between the two boys. “Alright, well in that case, gentlemen… welcome back.” He grins. “Jungkook, you’ve got captain tomorrow, Taehyung, you’re up next week, and you both have your starting positions back. Sound good?”

“Yes! Oh my god thank you!” He beams, removing his arm and fidgeting excitedly.

“We won’t let you down.” Jungkook adds with a huge smile that shows off those ridiculously cute bunny teeth of his.

Wait- what.

“I know you won’t.” He smiles mischievously. “But you’ve still been a pain in my ass for the better part of a year now so do me a favor and clean up the field and take everything to the equipment room.” He tosses a pair of silver keys and a dumbstruck Taehyung.

“Wait.. Seokjin!” He shouts after the man's retreating figure. “We made up! Everything’s fine now!”

“Make sure to lock up when you’re done!” He shouts back without turning around.

Taehyung gapes at him, ignoring the other man laughing quietly behind him. He feels a hand on the small of his back, ushering him back towards the field.

“Come on, I’ll get the cones, you grab the pinnies. We’ll make it quick.” Jungkook assures, already distancing himself to start his task.

Taehyung huffs. Of course he’d give himself a nice little pick up job and make Taehyung gather up a bunch of sweaty, smelly pinnies. He grimaces as he peels a particularly wet bright orange mesh jersey off the ground, it reeks of bad body odor and he kinda wants to throw it in Jungkook’s face.

He grins devilishly at the thought and bolts across the field to where his unsuspecting victim is still collecting the cones. Without a second thought he wraps his arms around the younger from behind and shoves the pungent mesh in his face. Jungkook immediately drops the cones and jerks back in surprise.

“Wh-“ he shrieks through the fabric. “Fucking hell, Tae?!” Taehyung laughs harder, clinging on for dear life as Jungkook wriggles to get free. “Dude these are nasty! Get them away from me!”

He whips his body around, throwing Taehyung to the ground but Taehyung maintains a strong grip on him and then end up tumbling down together in a mess of smelly pinnies and tangled limbs.

Jungkook pushes himself up so he hovering over the elder, his body caged between his barely straining arms as they catch their breaths, laughing childishly.

“You asshole,” he pants above Taehyung. “that was fucking gross.”

“Yeah, well maybe you shouldn’t have stuck me on pinnie duty then.”

They stay like that for way to long before Jungkook finally clears his throat and offers a hand to help the blonde to his feet, picking up the dropped cones and leaving Taehyung to collect the pinnies once again.

When they finally make their way back to the locker room they end up walking mere inches apart, shoulders brushing every few steps. It should probably bother him seeing as they’re both sweaty and gross, but it doesn’t.

“Maybe one of these days we’ll actually get to wrap up with everyone else.” He laughs as they enter the empty locker rooms once again.

Jungkook just shrugs. “I dunno. I kinda like the quiet, and privacy.”

“Ah, yes that’s right I forgot about your… shower activities.” He wiggles his eyebrows.

“Taehyung.” Jungkook glares but it’s clear he’s trying to hold back a smile.

“Sorry, couldn’t help it.” He giggles. “So, we got our spots back…”

“We did.”

“Guess that means we don’t have to meet for coffee anymore.” He jokes half-heartedly. In all honesty he’s actually really started to enjoy their little get togethers.

Jungkook pauses halfway through taking his shin guards off, the playful upturn of his lips no longer present.

“Yeah. Guess not, huh.” He says in a clipped tone.

Taehyung’s eyebrows knit together in confusion at the sudden change in demeanor. “You okay?” He asks, concerned.

The younger nods with a forced smile. “Yeah, for sure.”

“Jung-“

“I’ll see you later.” He interrupts, shoving the last of his things in his bag.

“I thought you showered––” The door closes and Taehyung is left talking to thin air. “––here…”

He’s alone and his brain is reeling trying to figure out what just happened. Why Jungkook had such a huge mood swing. Why everything feels so wrong.
