"Only you know who you were born to be

And you need to be free

To be that person."

Alex's P.O.V

Have I mentioned that I hate waiting?

And that was what I was doing  at this exact moment. Waiting for my dad's results to come back from the hospital to see if everything was alright.

Of course everything is alright! This is James Harlow you're talking about. He's the toughest man you know.

And yet there was this cold hand squeezing around my heart and my breathing was coming out uneven and laboured. Thankfully I was the only one here, so no one else could witness this. My mom and brother had taken my father home after his tests were done so he could rest. So I waited back.

Was it just because of the tests, or the fact that you can barely be in the same room as your father anymore?

My jaw clenched involuntarily at the thought.

Of course it was difficult to be around him but that doesn't mean I didn't want to!

Are you sure?

Unable to bare the onslaught of my thoughts while just sitting down I got up and started pacing the hallway. Trying to distract myself I let my eyes wander to the bulletin board.

There was hardly anything exciting in our small village to announce, and the bulletin boards were usually empty, so when my eyes caught sight of a colourful poster I let my feet move over to where the board was so I could read it.

What greeted me was a thought I had been trying to push out of my head before my father's arrival but the last two days had been so busy I barely had time to think about it at all.

The contest.

The only one that meant something to me anyways. My eyes drifted over to the sign up sheet and the pen dangling near it. I knew as a girl I would never be allowed to participate as long as this society remained as sexist as it was.

It has been three days since the ball, and I had only four more to figure out how to get to participate in the contest. Between my dad and work that didn't leave me with much time.

"Miss Harlow?", I suddenly hear the doctors voice from behind me.

I turn around swiftly and look to where the doctor was standing at the opening of the door of his office.

"Yes?", I say and I'm pretty sure the concern is quite evident in my tone.

"Would you please step into my office for a but Miss? It won't take to long.", He says gesturing to the open door.

I nod my head and make my way into the office. The doctor swiftly shuts the door behind me and takes a seat. I do the same thing and cross my arms waiting for him to continue. From the look on his face I could tell that it wasn't good news.

"Your father does not have long to live Miss Harlow", the doctor says heading straight to the point.
