"Hey."

Just one simple word and her body tingled. She twisted her head around to see him standing just mere inches from her. A smile played on his lips as he pulled his book bag just a little higher on his shoulder.

"Hi," she muttered in return.

"So prom, huh?" She gave him a funny look, causing his smile to quickly fade. What was he thinking? Such a stupid thing to say. Stupid stupid stupid. "I mean, how are you?"

She simply shook her head and walked away, as Kenzie appeared, latching possessively onto Zane's arm. "Babe, are you ready to go? I still have to pick up my dress from the tailor and you have to-"

"I'll be right back," he cut her off as he took off down the hall. He pushed open the doors and frantically looked for her. He walked over to the tree they used to sit under together, waiting for her mom to arrive.

She was there.

"Sophia," he breathed, plopping down beside her, "can you just answer me one thing, and I promise to leave you alone for good."

"Fine."

"Why don't you want to be friends anymore?"

She looked at him, speaking as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

"You know my secret."
