Alec's POV
"Alec." My mother says, snapping her fingers in my face. "Do I need to call Dr. Herondale?" Her face is filled with concern. She hasn't left since I woke up, I wonder how much work she's missed... "No." I say flatly.
"Mr. Lightwood." A woman says from the entrance of my hospital room. I have never seen her before. Her name tag reads "Nurse Rose." She has long red hair that is tied into a tight braid that cascades down her one shoulder. "Are you ready for PT?" I have to go through PT? Can I not walk? Instead of asking, I just nod my head. I move my legs over the bed with ease, they are a little heavy however. I guess I am not paralyzed. I try to stand up, but I begin to collapse. My legs can't support my body but Rose catches me. She helps me into the wheelchair she had.
"Alright Mrs. Lightwood, we will be back soon. If things go well, you both should be out of here by the end of the week." I look at my mother one last time before I am being pushed all the way to a small cardio room. The room has a treadmill that has a weird contraption next to it. It looks like something that holds a person up while they walk.
Rose pushes the wheelchair up to these bars. It looks like the bars that dancers use for balance. Rose helps me up and guides my hands around the bar to hold. I move my legs to be next to the bar before slowly walking between the pairs of bars. "So you have been unconscious for a little less than a year so we need to get your legs moving again." Is all she says but has a smile on her face, a caring one. We go through the routine she planned out and she tells me that I have more movement than the doctor's expected. She tries to put me into the chair but I ask to walk to my room. She smiles proudly. "Of course."
It takes us a few minutes longer to get to the room but when we do I am surprised by my entire family there. Their faces are so bright with happiness and tears. Jace is even crying. "I'll leave you to it. Same time tomorrow Mr. Lightwood." I walk fully into the room and Max runs up to be and tackles into me. It wasn't a lot of force but it nocks me onto the ground, Max on top of me. Gasps surround the room and everyone runs to me. I just want to yell at them. I don't like this. I don't like being this weak and needing help.
"Alec! Alec! I am so so so so sorry! I didn't mean it." Max repeats over and over until Jace helps me back into my bed. When I finally get under the be covers, I pat the spot next to me and Max climbs in. He wraps his arms tightly around me and stops crying. "It's alright Max. You got a lot stronger than the last time I saw you." My mother turns around with my comment. It hurt her.
It's quiet for awhile, unbearable. Everyone took a seat somewhere during the silence. It's frustrating, aggravating and I just blurt it out. "Does someone want to tell me what happened because I sure don't." My attitude showing.
That's when my mother leaves, my father shortly follows after her. "Hey Max, why don't we check on mom?" Izzy asks. He nods his head and Izzy lifts him into his arms. They walk out of the room and Jace sits on edge of the bed, right next to me. He takes a big sigh.
"You don't remember anything?" He asks. I just stare at him, my look being the answer. "Just wait for me to finish before asking questions, alright?" I just nod my head and he closes his eyes and lets out a puff of air.
"It was the middle of the night at home. Max was up late at night playing video games when he heard an noise. He went to mom and dad's room and woke them up. They heard people talking downstairs. You were already awake and went downstairs. Mom says she was running downstairs when she heard the gunshot. She saw one of the men shoot you. They all looked at her, her phone was in her hand and that's when they ran. They were trying to rob us and you unfortunately didn't hear them and walked in on them." That's all he says for a few seconds.
"Mom told us to stay upstairs and to call for an ambulance. She was so scared. They rushed you to the hospital and performed surgery to remove the bullet. That's when they learned there was less damage than they thought but you weren't waking up everyday and they weren't sure why. You had brain activity, were talking in your coma even. They just didn't know. That's really it." Then there is a long pause as I process everything.
"Am I still in high school?" I ask, he nods. "What grade?" He laughs a little. "You will be a senior this year. The school knew how smart you were and said you can just follow with Izzy and I." I nod. "How old am I?" I ask my final question. "You turn 18 next week, school started last week so you haven't missed much." All I do is nod.
I don't plan to ask about Clary or Magnus to Jace. Apparently Magnus isn't real. I learned that when I woke up from my mother. So I nod again. "I'll go get everyone." The rest of the day is quiet. Everyone but my mother goes home... I guess she really hasn't left.
The next few days is filled with PT with Rose, eating crappy hospital food, brain scans, and bloodwork. By Wednesday I was cleared to go home. My family came in a minivan, which I did not know we owned, and my mother and I met them downstairs. She's walking with her hand in mine, squeezing tightly. When we get to the front doors... my family is outside with balloons and signs about how happy they are that I am out.
We get into the car and I soon learn we have a 2 hour drive home, I was being treated at a hospital that specializes in neurology. I close my eyes and rest my head on the window. We hit a pump and I hit my head hard. My mother begins to yell at my father but I tell them I was okay. I look at Jace and he shrugs his one shoulder. I place my head on his shoulder and am overwhelmed with feelings for him that I forgot I had. I am too tired to care and I fall asleep effortlessly.
