THE BITTER TRUTH

"Put your best smile forward," my mother suggested
Whilst she plastered a big toothy smile of her own
They cracked a heinous joke as she served them
But she let it slide just like she brushed off yesterday's rebuff
"You're the light of the family, you cannot be despondent"
So she bled, she bled behind shut doors, closed curtains and muffled cries
No one cared or sympathized for her pain
At this point neither did she.

"Nobody wants a rebel," my father claimed
While I hid behind my mother in her solace
As she endeavoured to account for my misdemeanor
But she let it slide as she waved off my teary eyes
"I know what you were thinking, I had hope once too."
Yet this time she decided to reveal it, reveal the treasured family secret guarded by only women.

We are like elves,
Working in the dark for the welfare of the family.
We are like fairies,
Adding the glitter for the family to sparkle from outside.
We are like fairy godmother,
Transforming the family into what they desire.
We are like the genie,
Putting others wished before ours, fulfilling them promptly.
We are like the dwarfs,
Taking care of the damsel in distress.

Like them we take no credit for it
We do it out of love and for love
She said

But I knew better to read between the lines
It was no secret
It was the reality
The Bitter Truth.
