The elevator doors opened, and Jake stepped into the office, the stench of dust, and despair lingered into his nose. He was only two minutes late, but here at Jojo that was an inexcusable act.
"Oh Boy," Jake thought, "I'm about to be get Chewed out."
A man in a purple suit came up to him tapping his watch as if Jake had disrespected him.
"Young man, you know the rules." His voice was stern and sounded disappointed.
Jake tried to defuse the situation. "I am so sorry Sir, I was having car troubles, I promise it will not happen again, Jake said apologetically. Hoping his lie would be good enough.
"We at Jojo have a reputation to uphold. You being late makes us all look bad. I don't want to hear excuses; I just want you to do better. Understand young man?" His voice said irritatingly.
Jake was annoyed. Maybe it was from last night, or perhaps it was all the time he had spent working here but something in him snapped.
"It's Jake. My name is JAKE!" He shouted.
"You made me come into work when my grandfather died, you treat everyone here like slaves, and you can't even remember my name!?"
The heads in the office suddenly turned towards the commotion.
Jake was pissed.
"Young man!"
"IT'S JAKE"
The man stared at Jake a smile and anger coming across his face.
"Well Jake, this little outburst is very unsettling, you are disturbing your coworkers, you're causing me to feel assaulted, and that is why I'm going to be docking your pay. To make it up to me and everyone here you're going to be working overtime. I hope you learned a lesson from all of this." His smile could make babies cry.
Jake was over this.
"I'm leaving, he shouted in anger, his voice beginning to shake.
"You might think just because you gained a little bit of power as a manager that makes you better than others, but the truth is your pathetic. If I spent one more minute working here, I'd probably end up killing myself just so I wouldn't have to see your disgusting face ever again."
The room was silent, Jake felt he had taken things a little too far with that last comment, but he didn't care. He was free. His mom didn't need money anymore thanks to his Grandpas Will. His Grandfather was right. This was not the place for him. As he stormed out of there Jake felt overwhelmingly positive. It was like a great weight had been lifted off of him, like he had served time in jail and could finally experience the world again.
"Oh shoot!" Jake remembered. His friend was in jail, and he didn't even consider what to do about that yet.
Jake pulled out his phone and gave Jacob call.
No answer.
Jake groaned. He knew he was about to spend the rest of day tracking his friend down just to help bail him out if necessary. If only his friend wasn't dumb enough to drink and drive.
