Chapter 8

Amaan

Shit! The way she was glaring at me, looked as if she could kill me just with her eyes. I just realised when she was angry her eyes darkened. The once hazel eyes, now a darker shade of brown with specks of yellow.

"Where is it?" She asked, her voice like a whisper. "Look, Umer...." I tried to pacify her but she abruptly cut me off. "Just give it to me!" She raised her voice. "Okay, it's in my car I'm going to go and grab it, can you wait for me inside, please?" I ask her. She turns on her heels and storms into the living room.

Uncertain what to do, I try to ring Umer but think against it. If she needs to trust me, I need to work this out with her. I grab the file and jog into the grand house that is a mansion. "Here." I hand it to her and hover over her, keeoing close to her as I can, unsure of how she will react. I gage her expressions, they change from shock, to horror to sad. Its as if she is having flashbacks of different parts of her life, the good, the bad and the ugly.

She stands up and looks at me. "Don't look at me like that." She says and walks towards the window looking out towarss the fountain. "Like what?" I ask moving towards her. "Like you pity me" she says and turns to face me. "Poor Laylah, she has been through so much, her friends left her, the boy she liked, ditched her and even her mother is dead." She said monotonously. "I'm not a pity case." She says raising her chin, trying to look down on me.

"For all its worth, I never thought that." I lied. "The only thing that I thought about you after reading that", I point at the file, "was how brave and strong you are." I say truthfully. "Look does it matter what anybody says or thinks about you? This is your life. The only person that can affect it is you. I may be here tomorrow, I may not be, my opinions don't define you Laylah and you shouldnt care what somebody thinks of your either." I say softening my expression. Something in her eyes change. I smile at her. She furrows her brows at me and says "You'll be gone in a few days anyway." and walks towards the stairs.

"Is that what you think?" I walk after her and climb the stairs. Stop Amaan, don't push it, I think to myself but for some reason I want to chase her, talk to her. Make her smile and laugh again. I need her to trust me don't I? Yea right Romeo, you want more than just her trust I think. Stop, stop stop, stupid brains, stupid feelings, I push them aside.

I need to see how far I can push her, to see how much she will push me back. I want to try and understand what she will try and do to me, so I can prepare myself.

Er yea right you creep.

She opens a door and walks in without closing it. Is she inviting me in? Do I go in? I can't remember the last time I've been in a girl's room. Sophie doesn't count.

Here goes nothing.

"You think you can protect yourself?" I ask her walking towards her. She freezes. "What.." She tries to form a sentence. "So if I pushed you, you'd fight back, princess" I say without breaking eye contact with her. "Tell me Laylah" I raise my voice slightly.

Something flashes in her eyes as she hears me say her name. I don't want to freak her out. "Amaan, what" she says, her breath hitching in her throat. The way she says my name, something stirs inside me. I walk closer towards her very slowly, like a predator. She looks at me like a prey and she slowly lifts her hands up, bending her elbows slightly.

"If I grabbed you and pushed you on the bed, you can fight me off, protect yourself, stop me, huh Laylah? Come on princess you're so brave you can do that." I say playfully, egging her on. Come on princess give me a reaction. Something, anything.

"Amaan stay away from me" She says and lifts her hands towards her face. There it is.

I don't know what comes over me. I grab her hands and pin them behind her, my arms around her waist. "Get off me, no please." She pleads. "Come on, push me away" I say quietly, almost like a whisper.
