Chapter 25: Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will

"No!"  Suddenly, she shot her head up and realized she was still in her own room, still sitting by her desk; poor little Elina jolted awake by Aurora's shout."I guess I fell asleep here..." She rubbed her face with a heavy sigh and leaned in the chair, head hanging back, relieved.

"Gosh human, was that really necessary?"  The female pixie fell back again onto the handmade pillow-bed Aurora had prepared for her last night. "You almost gave me a heart attack!"

"I'm sorry for startling you," Aurora ruffled Elina's blond curls."I was just having a nightmare." She glanced at the clock by her bedstand and felt her face become as pale as a ghost."I-I'm late!" She jumped out of her chair in a hurry and rushed to her closet."That can't do! Professor Schuyler is expecting me to come in early..."

"Uh... Aurora?" Elina rubbed the sleepiness off of her eyes.

"What should I do?! I'll be scolded for sure!" Aurora was almost tearing her hair apart from her scalp.

"Hey..."

"Louise is already out, why didn't she wake me up?!" Trying to keep from freaking out totally about being late, she checked her schedule for the day while she hurried toward the door.

"Aurora!!"

"What?!" Finally, she turned her attention to her winged friend by the desk.

"There's a faster way." She said something and then, grabbed Aurora by the finger and tried to lug her towards the balcony; the girl showed no resistance and followed the pixie's intent. Then beating her tiny filamentous wings she buzzed almost soundlessly overhead. Elina landed softly on the railing; she threw her shoulders back, sucking in a deep breath, and then waved her hands in an endless dance, fingers making quick signs of enchantment, like letters in the air. Aurora almost thought she could read those signs.
