NATHANIEL MASTERON WASN'T exactly the mastermind that some thought he was.
In fact, he was quite the opposite. He was clumsy, oblivious, and tended to do things before he had the chance to think them through. He was, in short, a teenage boy who was forced to be so many things that he didn't understand.
Although around the Ark, he was an engima.
He was a silhouette. A shadow that darts past your perepherial vision, making you whip over to check if you had seen a ghost. His existance was known, but his identity could never be pinpointed. As one of the most notorious thieves that had ever lived on the Ark, he is told as a tale of selfishness and greed. The reality is far more simple than they make it out to be. For Nate wasn't selfish, he was really just trying to keep his mother from dying.
Having lung cancer on the Ark is truly not the ideal condition. With thin, stale oxygen, and medication that could never fully take her pain away, Nate was anxious. The closest thing he had to a family was a girl he had known since he was a child, and two boys who lived in a complete other station of the space station. He didn't want to be left alone, so he took up the habit of stealing to try and preserve what little hope he still clung onto for a family.
That hope crumbles at his feet when he is arrested. Tipped off by the girl he had trusted with his life, and locked away forever. Forced to watch his mom get executed right before his eyes, a part of the once carefree boy hardened, leaving a shell of who he was before.
Two years in prison would take it's toll on anyone, but the true pique of Nate's annoyance comes when he is sent down to earth. The planet he had learned was uninhabitable didn't province much promise... but hey, it was better than nothing.
Maybe with a bit of grit he could survive... maybe he could live to see just how prosperous a new world could become.
