The Plane

Georgie Lane and Elvis Harte first met on a special forces mission to Afghanistan. Georgie was a newly qualified yet very skilled army medic at the time and had only been on one army tour since she qualified whereas Elvis was the captain of an elite team of special forces soldiers and had been on many tours and missions.

When he first saw who was on his team for the upcoming mission he was confused why a female medic, let alone a private who was newly qualified was coming with them as this was going to be a very dangerous mission like any other in Afghanistan done by special forces. He didn't question it though as he thought maybe there is a good reason why they've put her on this mission as he trusted his superiors.

He first properly saw her walking across the tarmac at Brize Norton about to get onto the plane that was going to take them to Afghanistan. His first thought was wow she's pretty. He then walked Over to the plane himself and sat down in the only free seat there was.

She was sitting on the plane for no less than a minute when, the door was slammed shut and the plane was preparing to take off  . She gripped the edge of her seat tightly. She had always had a fear of flying but she had always wanted to join the army, so she had to deal with it as she had been working the whole 20 years of her life so far to do her dream job. She decided she wanted to be a soldier because she wanted to help people in areas of the world that weren't as fortunate as the UK in terms of war and disasters.

He opened the big brown envelope he was holding which contained the final mission debrief of what they were being sent out to do. He scanned over the multiple sheets of A4 paper and found that they were going to be rescuing two British teenage girls who were being held as hostages in a Taliban cell in the North whilst neutralising any insurgents they came across to prevent further terror threat coming from that particular cell. Once he was done reading he put the paper back into the envelope and zipped it into the front section of his bergen. He then looked up and noticed the soldier opposite him was private Georgie Lane. He also noticed that she seemed very nervous as she was clutching her seat very tightly as her knuckles were going White "First flight medic?" he asked her "No boss, this is my second I've already been to Afghan before" she replied "Y' seem nervous" he told her "I've  never liked flying ever since I was a little girl but, I've  always wanted to be in the army also, so it's just one of the con's of the job boss" Elvis nodded to show he understood and then said "I used to 'ate planes when I first started but you get used to it after a while. I found at first that sleep was a good way to pass time and calm my nerves" Georgie then said "I might give that a go then boss"

Georgie took his advice and tried to get to sleep but found it hard as she had never been able to relax and fall asleep whilst sitting upright but with the help of some music to block out the noise of the aircraft she managed to get to sleep after an hour.

Elvis turned and talked to his second in command beside him about the mission and what tactics they were going to use. They talked for about half an hour and after that he turned to face Georgie. He smiled to himself when he saw She had taken his advice and trusted him and then did the same as there was still a long flight ahead of them and they would be arriving at night so, they needed to be alert.

Georgie woke up 5 hours later with Cheryl Cole screaming in her ear "we gotta, fight, fight, fight fight, fight for this love" she forgot that she had only managed to get to sleep once she had blocked out the surrounding noise so, it gave her a bit of a fright as the music was almost on full blast. She turned it down and then took her water bottle out of her bergen and drank nearly half of it at once. Elvis woke up a few minutes after and looked around the plane to see all but one soldier was asleep. He then checked his watch which said 1800 hours. This meant they were less than an hour from camp Bastion the main army base in Afghanistan.

Elvis saw Georgie looked bored out of her mind so he said "Less than an hour left till we get to Bastion private" Georgie looked up, smiled and said  "That's good, I can't wait to get off of this plane and onto solid ground, boss" Elvis quietly laughed and then said "we must think alike private" Georgie laughed and then replied "I guess we do boss"

Georgie could feel her shoulders drop and feel herself relax for the first time in a while as she was enjoying talking to captain Harte and felt like he was a good CO unlike the one she was under on her first tour who, she felt held a grudge against her.

About half an hour had passed of small talk between the captain and medic. During this time everyone else had gradually woken up and they were nearing the base. Elvis got out of his seat and went to the front of the plane to address the troops "We are fifteen minutes away so full kit including lids" everyone replied simultaneously "Yes boss" there was then a fumble of everyone onboard putting on their protective vests, helmets and other pieces of kit.

The plane descended quickly and they touched down on the ground in around 15 minutes. After the door was opened they all got out and Went into a big warehouse. In here they were asked for their names so they could register. Georgie and Elvis were at the back of the queue which was moving pretty slowly so they had 5 minutes to talk. The conversation started when Georgie said "Thank you for helping me on the plane boss" Elvis smiled and then said "It's no bother really but, you're welcome" They chatted some more  and by no time they were at the front of the queue. Georgie was called forward.

"What's your name and rank?" Said  the lady on the others idea of the desk "Private Georgina Lane" replied Georgie. She could feel her face slowly turn to a bright shade of red as she hated her first name as it sounded way too posh for her and did not suit her personality whatsoever so, for as long as she could remember she has told everyone who she meets to call her Georgie instead. The lady then abruptly yelled "NEXT" so she went and joined the rest of the people she was on the mission with.

Elvis was behind her so he stepped forward and said "Captain Elvis Harte" before the lady even asked him so, he could quickly catch up with Georgie. When he reached her he questioned her "Georgina, is that really your name? You don't seem like a Georgina" Georgie could yet again feel herself go red and then replied "Yes boss .....but I fucking hate it so please call me either medic, Lane or Georgie please" Elvis then laughed and said "my names Elvis so, I know what it's like but, I don't 'ate my name as much as you seem to 'ate yours" Georgie then laughed and said "I guess your parents were big fans then" "Yes they are" he replied.

They reached the group so Elvis walked to the front of the soldiers and then shouted "ATTENTION" everyone stopped talking and faced the front. He then said "mission debrief at 0800 hours tomorrow so, get some scoff, then bed" everyone replied "Yes boss" and then walked towards the tents that held the soldier quarters. Everyone but Georgie and Elvis went into one big tent as that housed the male quarters. Georgie had a bit longer to walk to the female quarters and Elvis got his own private cabin as he was a captain.

About 10 minutes later everyone had dumped their kit and headed to get some scoff.
