"Wh-what?" I wasn't the only one surprised, with Todoroki and his two siblings staring at Endeavour in surprise.
"You heard me. And get rid of the awful stutter."
"She is our daughter, and you have no r—"
I took a breath. I hoped I wouldn't regret this.
"I'm your daughter, am I? Apparently I wasn't yesterday. Or last week. Or for the past fifteen years! Look, you always said that you guys would be better off without me. Here's your chance!"
"(L—"
"You're using my name now? You can't even bring yourself to say my first name, probably. You should just go back to calling me 'manipulative b*tch.' It's worked every day 'till now!"
My mother made a move to step towards me. "I said, out!"
She turned heel, and ran towards the door, dragging my father by the arm behind her.
Soon the door was clicking shut, and the squeal of tires was heard as their car sped out of the driveway.
I dropped to my knees, and my arms fell limply to my sides.
And the waterworks began.
I let the tears trickle down unobstructed, and Todoroki knelt down beside me, and wrapped an arm around my shoulders.
Once I had calmed down, a predictable question came. "Why did you cry?"
"I'm... not sure. Swept away in the emotion of the moment, I guess." I looked up at Endeavour. "They'll fight you in court, you know. To get me back."
I felt confusion bloom from Todoroki, and I glanced at him.
"I have... ugh, I don't know how to put this... value."
His brows rose slightly.
"I don't know exactly what they did... but I don't want to talk about it."
They rose even more.
"Why didn't you fight back?"
My eyes returned to Endeavour.
"What do you mean?"
"You only dodged. Why didn't you fight?"
"Laying a hand on someone —related to them by blood— with intents of harming them, is a line that they have crossed. And so —almost purely because they've done it— I refuse to do so as well. I'm not lowering myself to their level."
Todoroki's arm tightened around me. "All your life, you said?"
I nodded hesitantly.
"Nobody noticed your bruises?"
"I was homeschooled until reaching middle school."
I saw comprehension cross his features.
"Um... just a quick question, but what am I going to wear? My school uniforms are at home."
"We'll buy you more." Todoroki offered.
"And I have a cat...?"
"I'll go with you to pick your cat up after school."
Endeavour threw a glare at Todoroki, but said nothing.
"Mr. Endeavour... why did you offer to let me stay here?"
"You might not get to stay here."
"Oh... I see."
"You need to prove yourself first. Use your quirk on me."
