I looked at Malia, the stench of nervousness, and something close to fear was overwhelming. Scott and Isaac were fairly relaxed, and my fingers only twitched every few seconds, which was an improvement from my usually very spastic movements.
"Malia- you'll do fine!" I tried to reassure her, giving her shoulder a light squeeze. She looked to the classroom door ahead of us as the line slowly filed into the room.
"I'm just- I really want to be able to graduate with you guys!" She said uncertainly, flexing her fists that contained around 15 sharpened pencils. I pulled her into a hug quickly, before she snapped the innocent wiring utensils.
"You will! You're so ready for this," I said encouragingly. She pulled back a little and smiled up at me. She doesn't stink as much anymore, confidence leaking it's way into her body.
"Thanks momma fox," she said earnestly. I ruffled her hair and nodded, glad I could make my pup feel a little better.
We made it to the door and shuffled inside, placing our phones in envelopes to be left at the front of the room until the testing was over. We each had to place our thumb on an ink pad and then on our answer sheets. It was a ridiculous security precaution in my opinion, but whatever. The guy from the ministry was giving me a weird vibe, but I ignored it as I took the booklet he offered and made my way to an empty desk. Mrs. Martin was standing beside him, cell phone in hand and checking it constantly. Weren't there supposed to be two teachers in here with us? I shrugged it off and she whispered to the man about going to find coach before leaving the room. I went back to examining the ministry dude again. Something felt- off. He looked relatively normal, with shaggy brown hair, big black glasses, and I plain face.
My fox instincts wouldn't let it go though. There was something wrong. I looked to Scott, and he was watching the ministry guy too, a small frown on his face. He must have felt my gaze, because he turned to look at me. We did our best friend communication thing, speaking with our eyes. We both felt the threat, and both thought it had something to do with the guy sitting at the front of the room, nonchalantly waiting for Mrs. Martin to return as he glanced at his watch. We both knew there was nothing we could do- for now we would just have to keep an eye on him.
I sent my feeling of suspicion and unease through the mate bond, my eyes flashing orange momentarily, in case Derek hadn't already been paying attention to my emotions. We might need backup, and I didn't have my phone to tell anyone that. I felt him accept the emotions and knew he would be on his way. I just hoped he wasn't alone. I glanced around the room, checking on my other two pups. They didn't sense the danger as far as I could tell. They were a little nervous for the test, but nothing else. Scott turned to Malia and Kira behind him and I nudged Isaac. We needed to warn them before the test started- before we wouldn't be allowed to talk.
"Isaac- somethings wrong. Something's off about the ministry guy. Don't worry too much, but be prepared," I whispered, too quiet for any human to hear. He nodded his understanding, glancing to the front of the room.
Mrs. Martin entered the room again and whispered to the ministry guy that Coach wouldn't be joining us. He answered her and said they needed to get started regardless, and she nodded. He turned to face the room.
"Alright students- you will have two hours to complete your booklet. There will be one break at the first hour mark, and that's it. Please make sure to put your names on the front page of your booklets," his bored voiced droned. "There's always one that's not listening to me right now and will forget, which will result in a failing grade."
The sound of pencils scraping across papers filled the room as we all hurriedly did as we were told. He glanced at his watch and nodded.
"Open your booklets and get started," he ordered.
