When I was a little girl, my mother used to tell me I was special. That I was destined for something extraordinary.
I used to believe her, now I'm not so sure. Things have changed quite a lot since she said that.

I was in the barn working on my board, when I heard car doors close.
"Charlie!" I heard my mother call my name. I grabbed a rag and walked out of the barn. There was a man in a leather trench coat and eye patch and a woman in a S.H.I.E.L.D uniform. They both looked in my direction.
    "Charlie Denver?" the man questioned.
"Yes," I answered while wiping the grease from my hands.
"My name is Nick Fury. I'm the director of the Strategic Homeland Intervention and Logistics Division. Otherwise known-"
"Otherwise known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Yeah, I know who you are. I've been expecting you."
Fury look at me surprised which seemed to shock the woman next to him.
He must not get surprised often, I thought to myself.
"I've read all of my father's research on genetic mutation, Howard and Tony Stark, S.H.I.E.L.D, HYRDA, and more. So, I know all about S.H.I.E.L.D Director Fury."
Fury seemed impressed but it also seemed to me that he knew of my father's research. I wanted to know why Fury was here. Although I was expecting to see someone from S.H.I.E.L.D at some point, they don't just show up for no reason.
"Would you like to come inside? Mom just put on a fresh pot of coffee."
Fury and the woman nodded and we made our way inside. Mom was in the kitchen washing dishes. She turned around and smiled at the three of us.
"Ma, this is Director Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D and Agent..." I realized I never asked the woman her name when we were outside.
"Maria Hill. Pleasure to meet you Ma'am."
Mom shook their hands and Fury turned to me.
"Is there somewhere we can talk?"
I nodded. Mom handed us each a mug of coffee.
"Follow me. Ma, we will be downstairs. Could you make sure we aren't disturbed?" I asked my mother. She nodded.
    "Sure honey."
I thanked her and made my way to the downstairs door with Fury and Hill in tow. We went through the door, down the stairs and continued down the hallway until we came to metal elevator doors. I punch in the passcode on the keypad. The doors opened and the three of us stepped into the elevator. Once the elevator stopped, we entered the bunker and made our way to the couch and chair.
"This is very impressive. Has this always been here?" Hill asked taking a drink of her coffee.
"You could say that. My dad wanted to make the basement into a soundproof, unbreachable bunker. He made the walls using some sort of super metal. Vibranium I think he said it was called."
Fury and Hill exchanged curious glances to each other when I mentioned that my father used Vibranium to make the bunker.
"That really is impressive Miss Denver," Fury then said to me. I took a sip of my coffee and put my hand up.
"Call me Charlie, please. Miss Denver sounds way to formal. Now, what did you want to talk to me about? I would assume that you are not here just to make small-talk."
Fury looked at Hill, then back to me.
    "Ever heard of Loki?"
"I think so. Asgardian prince, God of Mischief, adoptive brother of Thor."
Fury then handed me a file that Hill pulled out of the bag she was carrying. I opened the file and there was a photo of a blue glowing cube.
"That is the Tesseract. Howard Stark found it in the ocean back in 1945. Loki stole it from us two days ago," Fury explained.
"That still doesn't explain what you want from me Director Fury."
Fury again looked at Hill, then he pulled something out of his pocket. It looked like a USB drive.
"We are putting together a team to help us take Loki down. We at S.H.I.E.L.D would like you to be a part of that team," Hill explained.
I took another drink of my coffee then put the mug back on the table.
"So, you want me to what, become a superhero?" I questioned.
"More or less," Fury replied. He then handed me the USB drive.
"This will have all the information you need on the people we've chosen for this team."
The three of us then made our way upstairs. When we got to the front door, Fury turned to face me.
"Please, look over that drive. Call me with your final decision," he said shaking my hand and handing me a card with a phone number on it. I nodded and closed the door. I made my way over to the dining room table where my laptop was, opened my laptop, and plugged the USB drive in. Mom came up behind me just as the S.H.I.E.L.D icon that appeared on my desktop.
"What is that?" Mom asked. As I double-clicked on the icon, a bunch of files popped up on the screen.
"This is who Fury wants me to team up with. But I'm not sure I'm ready to use my powers out there," I explained while gesturing to outside with my hands. Mom sat down in the chair next to me then put her hand on my wrist.
"Charlie, honey, you were given these powers for a reason. I truly believe that. Your father used to tell me that he could see greatness in you. With everything he accomplished in his life, he said that you and your sister were his greatest adventure."
When she said that, I could feel the tears well up in my eyes. My father and I were inseparable until he died so to hear my mother say those things means the world to me. I knew then what I had to do.
I stood from the table, closed my laptop, hugged my mother, then took my laptop up to my bedroom. I grabbed a duffle bag from my closet and tossed it onto my bed. I gathered up my laptop and charger then put them into my laptop bag. I grabbed some essentials and put them into the duffle bag. I then noticed the sun hitting something on my bedside table. It was a photo of my dad and I. I walked over to the photo and picked it up. The photo was of me on my dad's back and the both of us were making goofy faces at the camera. I smiled thinking of my dad and proceeded to put the photo into my duffle bag. I zipped up the bag and made my way downstairs. When I reentered the kitchen, Mom was putting dishes away. She turned to me, smiled, then walked over to hug me.
"You will be fine. I believe in you," she whispered into my ear. We broke the hug and she kissed my forehead.
"I love you so much Charlotte. Please be careful and stay safe."
Tears began welling up in my eyes again. She hasn't called me by my full name since Dad died. That is how I knew that she truly meant what she was saying to me.
"I love you too Ma," I said kissing her cheek. I walked out the door with my two bags only to see Fury standing in my yard, next to a small Quinjet.
"I knew you would make right choice," he said to me. I followed him onto the Quinjet and sat down.
I did too, I just hope I really am ready for this, I thought to myself. I felt the Quinjets engines turn on and it began to lift into the sky.
After a few hours of flight, I looked out the window to see a giant military-looking boat.
This must be what S.H.I.E.L.D calls the Helicarrier.
"Take us down," Fury told the pilot. The pilot nodded and flew the jet down onto the boats dock.
Once the jets ramp went down, Fury got off the jet and made his way inside. I then noticed a woman with short read hair standing with a man wearing a brown blazer. I recognized him immediately.
"Dr. Banner?" I questioned. He turned to me and gave me a look of confusion while fiddling with his fingers.
    "Yes?"
I walked over to him so I could shake his hand. When he released my hand, he went back to fiddling with his fingers.
"I'm Charlie Denver. Daughter of Isaac Denver. I've heard a lot about you. I'm honoured to meet you."
"Oh, I knew your father only for a brief time. My condolences, he was a good man."
I thanked him then turned to the red-haired woman.
"Charlie Denver," I said extending my hand out. She smiled then shook my hand.
    "Natasha Romanoff."
The three of us then made our way over to two men. One was wearing a black suit while the other was wearing a button up shirt with a brown leather jacket. Once we reached them, both men turned to us.
"Charlie Denver, I presume?" the man in the suit asked me. I nodded and shook his hand.
    "Phil Coulson," he introduced himself.
"Nice to meet you," I replied.
"I briefly met your father a few years before his death. Condolences, he was a good man," Coulson told me. I thanked him and then Natasha told Coulson that he was needed on the bridge. He went inside leaving the two men, Natasha, and myself. I turned to Dr. Banner and the other man. I extended my hand out to the man in the leather jacket.
"Charlie Denver," I said introducing myself. He put his hand in mine
"Steve Rogers," he replied. No freaking way, I thought to myself.
"Rogers as in Captain Rogers? Captain America?"
He nodded. I smiled at him.
"My nephew is a huge fan of yours. He sometimes pretends he is you when he and his sister play outside," I told him. I noticed a pink tint on his cheeks. Natasha then came over to us.
"You guys might want to step inside in a minute. It's going to get a little hard to breathe," she told us. Steve and Dr. Banner then walked to the edge, me following behind them. I could hear what sounded liked engines starting up. It was coming from under the water. Steve asked if we were on a submarine.
"Really? They want me in a submerged pressurized, metal container?" Dr. Banner said.
I then noticed propellers coming out of the water. I realized that this was not a boat at all. It was a large aircraft.
"Oh no, this is much worse," Dr. Banner then said looking at the propellers.
Natasha walked the three of us inside the Helicarrier and I looked around the main room that we had just entered. I saw many S.H.I.E.L.D agents working hard at different stations. I saw Steve walked over to Fury and hand him ten dollars. I paid no mind to it then went to stand beside Steve.
"Incredible isn't it?" I asked Steve as I crossed my arms over my chest. He jumped a little showing that I may have startled him.
"Yeah. It almost reminds me of the war. But with a lot more..."
"Electricity," he and I said in unison. We looked at each other a chuckled.
An agent called to Fury to tell him that they found Loki in Stuttgart, Germany. Fury turned to Steve and I.
"You're up," he said. Steve and I nodded then two agents took Steve and I to where our suits were. I didn't really even have a suit so I wasn't sure what I was being taken to. I assumed I would just be getting a plain S.H.I.E.L.D uniform. But once the agent and I entered the room, she opened a compartment that held my suit.
My suit seemed simple. The top was maroon and sleeveless with a zipper in the front. The paints were just plain maroon. The boots were black, combat styled with small, thick heels. There were black fingerless gloves that went to just before my elbows. There was also a black mask. After putting the suit on, I noticed a pair of escrima sticks. I picked them up, looking them over as I did so. I noticed that they looked as if they had been modified in some way.
"Your father modified those some years ago. He made them able to absorb your electrokinesis and help you to use that power when you fight," Fury said from behind me. I turned to him, clipping the escrima sticks onto the holster I attached to my back.
    "You knew my father?"
    Fury nodded.
"I knew him well. He was one of the few people I could call a friend."
Fury walked me down to a platform where the Quinjets were. I saw Natasha and Steve standing outside a Quinjet. Fury cleared his throat causing Steve and Natasha to turn in our direction.
"We want Loki alive. A few scrapes and bruises will work. We need his sceptor to help locate the Tesseract," Fury told us. The three of us nodded then entered the Quinjet. Natasha sat in the pilot seat while Steve and I sat next to each other on one of the benches along the wall.
I could feel the nerves building up inside of me, causing my hands to shake.
"First mission?" Steve asked me noticing my nervousness. I nodded.
"The obvious huh? Honestly, I didn't think I would be nervous. I've used my powers lots of times. But this time, I just, I don't know. Something feels....different."
Steve put a reassuring hand on my wrist. I looked at him to see him smiling.
"You'll do fine. Plus, you won't be alone down there."
I smiled back at him. It was strange, I barely knew him but I felt like I could trust Steve with my life if I needed to.
