there's just so long one could go,
being kept a shameful secret.
is it so bad for them to know,
so hard to leave that closet?
but still i waited,
as weeks became months.
breath bated and braving their hatred,
not once crumbling to their bigoted affronts.
but still he chose her,
when push came to shove.
a bride was much simpler,
to wed but not love.
i gave him the moon and the stars,
too head over heels to catch his bluff.
he gave me nothing but hope and scars,
note to self: love alone is never enough.

شِعرA collection of poems I wrote between the ages of 16 and 19, about an inescapable first love that burned like wildfire and cloud castles that crumbled into a kingdom of ruin. And from its ashes, the Knight of Hearts rode on. ©︎ 2016 Karran Kumar
