Scarlett's POV
Pop!
The champagne spewed all over Riley's hand as she loudly cheered for Jayden's birthday.
Without a moment's consideration, she chugged right from the bottle. I could clearly see the way Jayden's face scrunched up in disgust.
But he didn't do anything and just went along with it. Nothing good really came from going against Riley's actions. She never lost any debate with anyone as she always coaxed them into doing anything.
When I say anything, it's really anything.
Like, for today, she literally forced me to wear high heels even after me making the puppy face a gazillion times. And that was another of Riley's superpowers. She was immune to the puppy face.
"Happy Birthday Jay!" She yelled her lungs out into the microphone that was thrust into her hands. A small giggle slipped out of me when I saw Jayden wince slightly before discreetly plucking it out of her hands.
He held the microphone in one hand and simultaneously swung an arm around Riley. His soothing voice filled the hall as he spoke. "Everyone give it up for Riley Haven! The girl who has always done my dirty work."
Everyone laughed at this including Riley. Jayden pressed a kiss to the side of her head and pushed her away jokingly.
He jumped into a small thank you speech which everyone listened to because that was the effect Jayden had. Everyone listened to him.
Riley sauntered over to me, smiling slightly. The dress that she wore did every bit of justice to her perfect figure. It was a black dress that barely reached her mid thighs and was held up by only two thin straps.
She plucked a glass from a tray on the way and downed the entire thing in one go. When she was close enough, I said, "How much has your alcohol tolerance built up? You are literally like a tank."
Riley's blood red painted lips raised up into an innocent smile which had gotten her out of the worst of the worst trouble before. "Jealous Scarlett? That I hold my alcohol?"
I scoffed. "Me? Jealous of your alcohol tolerance? Bless your delusional heart."
Riley rolled her eyes at this and opened her mouth ready to retort, when Jayden's voice boomed through the speakers.
"Carter, you made it! Come here little boy, drain some glasses into your system. I know you love it, don't resist." Jayden said teasingly into the mic. But his voice sounded strained.
In other cases I would have laughed. For a person who never drank alcohol in his life, Jayden sure promoted it well. But Carter's name threw me off kilter.
My heart stopped in my chest as I stared blankly at Jayden, fighting my rising panic. Riley's eyes widened a fraction before she bounded back to the stage, her hand clutching mine in a death grip, snatched the microphone from Jayden and shouted "Oh Miss Scarlett! We can't miss a group photo on such an occasion" She pulled me beside her where Carter was standing.
But he barely glanced at me. He looked straight ahead, a smile plastered on his perfect face. So perfect that it hurt to see him sometimes.
I couldn't take it anymore. I was feeling nauseous and I had to get away before I puked all over the stage. I tore my hand away from Riley and bounded down the stairs of the stage blindly already planning Riley's murder.
And I was so into it, that I didn't realise when the ground slipped underneath my feet as I toppled sideways into the pool beside the stage. The scream that tore out of my throat was cut off mid-way when I was completely submerged in the water.
