I kept my pace casual as I walked along the busy street, but inside I was freaking out. Who the hell were they? And how could they…..? No they couldn’t do whatever I thought they did, I was half asleep, not thinking straight, yeah that’s what it was. I turned the corner, glancing casually over my shoulder. I saw a flash of familiar red hair not to far behind me. Damn they were fast, but this was my city not there’s. I was racking my brain when I noticed the bar on the other side of the street slowly filling up for the night. Perfect.
I crossed the street just as the light turned green behind me. Good, they would be stuck on the other side for at least a minute, just enough time for me to put my plan into action. I walked to the bar, speeding up my pace slightly and made my eyes water. I ra into the bar, letting the tears flow down my face. I stumbled to the bar, glanced fearfully around and then ducked behind it, pulling my knees to my chest.
“Problem there sweet heart?” The barman leaned down, shirt rumpled, a half empty bottle swinging from his hand. I shook my head fast.
“Please, its-its my ex, he and his friend they’re after me……..he’s going to find me and-and………..” I really let the tears flow down my face, hoping this guy wasn’t like some of the bartenders down town. The man’s face softened and he patted my shoulder.
“Now don’t you worry sweetheart, we won’t let these guys get ya, what do they look like any how?” I heard the door open and peered up over the counter top. There was Daniel and Ezekiel, glancing around and pushing through the crowd.
“Those two,” I whispered even though it was loud and noisy in the bar. “The Latino’s my ex,” The bartender nodded.
“I can see why you ran away from them, go straight back turn left, there’ll be an exit. That’ll lead you to the alley behind the place and you can get to the bus corner from there.” I nodded my head, slipping out a fifty.
“Thank you,” I whispered. He made a little shooing motion before stuffing the money into his pocket.
“Gentlemen, what can I do you for?” The bar man asked pulling out several glasses. I crept from behind the counter, missing Daniel’s reply. I stayed close to the wall, keeping my head down, wishing for the first time in my life that my hair wasn’t so noticeably red.
“We’re looking for a friend of ours.” Ezekiel lied smoothly, his eyes trailing around the room. Oh shit. “She’s got dark red hair and-” His eyes lilted on me.
“and there she is.” He took a step towards me, but the bartender blocked his way.
“Really? Cause I don’t see no gingers in here but your friend.” The barman’s voice took on the Get out of my bar and go screw yourself tone I heard from most bartenders, completely different from the tone he had had with me. Maybe this guy had a daughter or something. I saw three other guys stand next to the bartender, arms crossed, scowls on their faces.
“We don’t want trouble, we’re just-“
“I don’t give a damn about what you want,” the bartender interrupted Daniel. “You either buy a drink or get the hell out of my bar.” Both Ezekiel and Daniel’s eyes flitted to me and Ezekiel shook his head slightly. Time to go. I waved my fingers at them and quickly made my way out the back.
