I walked out of the hotel shower, twisting my damp hair up into a low bun at the base of my neck. Matt was sprawled out on one of the beds, the news playing softly. I dropped down next to him, arranging myself against the back board of the bed.

“Anything interesting?” Matt shook his head.

“Zip, although we are in the middle Nebraska for chrissake.” I slapped him lightly on the chest.

“Language Matt.” He chuckled slightly and grabbed my hand.

“Sometimes I really think you’re the angel here, Shay.” I rolled my eyes but let him hold onto my hand. It was nice to have some physical contact that wasn’t strictly due to fighting for our lives.

“Uh huh, and where would you be without me?” He sat up suddenly, catching me off guard. Even after years of working with Matt, and even after knowing what he was, his speed still, not scared me; I don’t get scared, but caught me by surprise.

“I wouldn’t be anywhere without you Shay,” he replied fiercely, gripping my hand so hard it hurt, but I didn’t let go. “Don’t you ever go up against a demon unarmed, do you understand me?”

“Matt, I wasn’t exactly unarmed. I had a gun that I thought was full-“

“That’s it you thought the clip was full. Jesus Christ, Shay you know what could have happened if-“ Oh dear god, he was going into full rant mode now. I placed my free hand over his mouth.

“Matt, stop and breath ok? Nothing did happen.” His eyes burned against mine and with a sigh, I dropped my hand.

“Can you guarantee something won’t the next time?” I bit my lip. I desperately wanted to tell him that it wouldn’t but I didn’t lie, couldn’t lie. Not to Matt.

“I know I can’t, but I can try my damn hardest to make sure it doesn’t happen.” He narrowed his eyes. “Do you doubt my abilities Matthew?” Matt was one of the most laid back people I had ever known, he had been for years, but lately…I knew he was protective of me. We were partners, to put it in simple terms, we fought and protected each other against everything, but he was getting even more paranoid then normal lately.

Not that I didn’t know what the cause of that was.

Matt stroked the back of my hand with his thumb. His voice was suddenly very soft, all anger had disappeared.

“Shay, there isn’t any one else on this world I would trust my life to more than I trust it to you, but if a demon got a hold of you…” He trailed off and I knew what he was thinking. The main way to become a demon was to literally have your soul sucked out. There were other ways too, but that one was the one no one ever came back from, and I’d seen my fair share of things to know.

“Than I expect you to kill me.” He stared up at my face for the first time in the last few minutes.

            “Shay-“
