My eyes shoot open. The gem still sits on my comforter. Sweat pours off of me. My hands shake. My whole body trembles. I grab the gem and place it in my small jewelry box. I get up and walk down the hall. Everyone is gone. Nobody is home. Mom must be at work. Tucker is most likely at school. I walk into the bathroom. I grab a towel out of the cabinet and turn the water on once again.
The steam fills the room. I strip down and step in. It scorches my skin. I just close my eyes. The memory of Chris and I looking at eachother before i died hits me in the heart. It hurts. Although it was just a trance, a hallucination, it seemed real. My eyes closed as i looked at the love of my life across that pasture.
My eyes open again. I wash down my body. Im not going to school. So, i take my time in the shower. I stand for a really lengthy time. There is no need to rush.
Then, as i finish up rinsing my hair, a loud bang sounds from the living room. I cut off the water. I listen for the sound again. Then, the sound echos. Knocking.
"COMING!" i yell out loud. I grab my towel and wrap it around me. My hair drips onto the wooden floor.
I open the bathroom door and run as fast i can despite the towel.
Just as i jog down to a walk in front of the door, knocks begin to echo louder. They seem to be growing impatient.
I reach for the doorhandle. My slippery hand barely gets a good enough of a grip. I open it up to a crack.
"Hey." Chris says breathing heavy.
"Hey." i said softly, shocked that hes even here.
"Can i come in?" he questioned. He seemed worried, scared.
"Yea sure. but im only in a towel." i finished as i open the door wide enough for him to come in. i closed it behind him. He took a seat on the couch. He patted the place beside him, signaling for me to sit beside him.
Although im wrapped in a towel, what could go wrong?
I took a seat.
"Okay Samantha, so those people.." he started, choking on his words. "Those werent the normal people that come into the game. those people were different. They didnt belong there. They didnt know what they were doing. I dont know how they got in there but something is up."
"I thought they were the freshmen from my class?" i asked confused.
"A few might have been.." he nodded.
"Oh." i said silently.
"Its just, with something like that in the game, something will go wrong. There has never been war in the game. The only time we kill is when its time to get out of there." he said rather annoyed.
"Then, why are they doing it now?" i asked.
"Well, first of all, we already know that these arent the usual people who play the game. i dont know how they got in there. Yeah, there might have been a few freshmen from school, but did you recognize anybody else?"
I thought for a moment. I didnt recognize anybody else. I was too busy killing and being killed.
"No" i prodded.
"Exactly."he said getting up. "Go get some clothes on real quick."
I scurried out of the living room and down the hall into my room. i throw on a crop top and some jogging pants. I throw my hair up in a bun. I dont really care right now. We are skipping school. It practically the first day.
I rush back into the living room. He still stands in the exact spot i left him.
We walk out of my door as i lock it behind me. We get in his mustang and back out of my driveway. We begin to drive down the road, and then pull onto the highway.
The whole car ride is silent, which makes me think way more than i need to.
Chris stares out the windshield, like I'm not even there.
Suddenly, the gut feeling comes like I need to tell him.
"I love you." i say to him softly.
He finally looks over at me, and finally seems to see me.
"I love you too." he said with a small smile. I smiled back.
He turned back to look at the road, and so did I. All that followed was my screams.
It happened so fast. The car in front of us. Us in the wrong lane. Chris trying to spin the wheel fast, but losing control. The car... flipping.
And then just when everything seemed fine. I was still breathing. I figured we were both safe but no.
That is not the case.
Chris wasn't waking up.
