Chapter Four- First Day, Dismay

Today was the first official day at school. I put on my new uniform for the first time (about ten years ago they changed the school rules saying you can wear whatever you want on your arrival day for the whole day).

Me and Rose both laughed at each other because of how ridiculous we both looked in our high heels and poofy pink dresses.

Regardless, I applied some eyeliner and a coat of lipgloss and Rose just whipped on some mascara whereas Emmalyn waltzed to the girl's bathroom to probably apply six cheerleaders worth of makeup (ha!).

When Rose and I walked into the dining hall, we realised that were lots of boys there but no girls there.

All the Evergirls were instead primping and preening, trying to look the best for the boy the wanted to impress, despite the fact that just after The Tale of Sophie and Agatha they passed an Equality Act saying that while you still had to attend the Snow Ball, you could so with friends, on your own, or even with a member of the same sex if you really wanted to.

When we sat down, I heard a "What are you looking at?" one of the Everboys yelled at us. "Are you two planning to go to the Ball together?" He and a bunch of his friends started guffawing.

I scoffed. "Just because we're not prissing, primping, and preening just to impress some boy doesn't mean that we're going to the ball together, you sexist prick!"

Everyone looked shocked. Even Rose's mouth was wide open and she dropped her fork.

"And you know what?" I said, fast-walking over to their table, "I'd rather go to the Ball with Rose than ANY of you and that's a fact."

I just stood there, by the table, with my arms crossed.

All the boys looked very confused and then left the dining hall to go lift weights or whatever.

When I walked back to me and Rose's table, Rose looked in awe of me.

"That. Was. So badass!" she said in an awestruck tone before jumping up into the air and clapping wildly.

"Oh, it was nothing," I said in a half-hearted way.

We then ate food for about ten minutes and then we walked to our first class together, Beautification. We both sat down in the second row in the classroom (there were four rows in total).

That's when the other Evergirls strutted into the class. With their shiny hair, perfect pout, and glimmering eyes, they looked so beautiful it was beyond real. Yet I kept reminding myself that I was more practical than they were and probably smarter than they were too.

"Ew, stop looking at my butt!" the strawberry girl said to Rose. I thought that she was just being mean again when I saw that Rose was in fact doing so.

"I can't believe she's doing that, Keira," a random Asian-looking girl with dark hair said to the strawberry girl.

Keira. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Just before I could say a snarky remark to Keira, a ridiculous looking yet somehow stunning lady in her fifties walked into the room. Professor Anemone. It had to be, judging by what I had heard from one of my cousins, Naomi of Foxwood, who was a year above me at this school.

"Welcome! Welcome!" Professor Anemone proclaimed.

"Please take out your textbooks! Today for our first lesson we're using the book Winning Your Prince to perfect your perfect princess smile!"

Both Rose and I looked bewildered and shocked. Winning Your Prince? This was ridiculous. If any girl wanted to date then that was fine, but boys should like girls for themselves, and not for some smile.
