I awoke at the sight of sunlight through the mountain cracks. I tried to stay asleep, but to no avail.
"All right, Nick," I said tiredly, "Up and at 'em"
My name is Nicholas Stayne, but I prefer to call myself Nick. I am known as The Sorcerer Smurf, at least, that's what the wizard Mallorca called me.
As I went to the bathroom to go freshen up, I looked in the mirror and saw the reflection of a Smurf. It was my reflection alright, just not the one I was used to.
As I looked down at myself, I thought of how I got here, about what led me to this state.
It was three years ago, I was walking down the street to my Mom's apartment. She was nice, fair but firm, and I was on my way to give her a gift for her 48th birthday. Unfortunately, when I got there, I saw police all over the apartment, and they gave me the truth: she had suffered a heart attack and died.
I was so taken aback by the news that I was in disbelief, which didn't help me as an explosion knocked everyone back and wrecked the nearby buildings.
When I got up, I saw there was a small strange being there with a cloak, purple skin, and red eyes, and another one who had a long beard and a staff. I was both frightened and confused, so I hid behind a busted car until they left.
I could still hear them yelling at each other, and I peeked over the car wreckage to see them.
"You should not be here Ignotus," the older one said, his staff in attack position.
"You promised me power, wizard, and yet you seek to take it from me like I was nothing," said the menacing one, his eyes glowing brighter.
The two fought it out with the old wizard getting hurt by the man named Ignotus, and I was getting hesitant about whether to act or not.
When the old man was knocked down at last, Ignotus started to prep a killing blow to end him.
In that moment, I threw caution to the wind, grabbed a fallen sign, and ran over to the villain, hitting him with the big end of it.
In response, he hit with the force of a car, knocking me several feet away. I got back up and rushed toward him, only for him to hit me with a blast of magic.
I remember the feeling in that moment, being changed, transformed into something else...
I woke up in a strange mountain temple, and the wizard was right there in front of me.
"Listen boy," he said, holding a wound, "you are in the temple inside the Mountain of Mists, in the realm of the Smurfs."
"Wait, what happened to me!?" I said, looking at myself, panicking as I was now a Smurf.
"Your exposure to Ignotus's magic transformed you into a Smurf, and I brought you here because I need your help."
Mallorca then explained everything to me, about who he and Ignotus were, where he came from, and why I was brought here.
"So you brought me here to make me a champion, why?" I asked, confused.
"Because you put your fear aside to help me in spite of the danger, and your heart is unwilling to give up until the end," he said, staggering, "besides, you are my last option now."
He the laid his hand on my chest, and spoke a spell.
"Wizards past, far and well, hear me now and heed my spell. Give this one the champion's worth, and make him the new Sorcerer Smurf!"
I was hit with another blast, and when I opened my eyes, I was floating off the ground, clad in a red wizard's robe, a long blue cloak, and an eight-pointed golden medallion around my neck.
"What...what just happened to me?"
"You have transformed into The Sorcerer Smurf, champion of the realm," he said, giving me his weapon, a double sided hilt with two guard points.
I took it, and then I looked up to see he was fading away.
"Protect the realm from the shadows, and never be afraid of who you are."
Then he was gone, and I was left alone.
After I was done reminiscing in the bathroom, I decided to clear my head and go for a walk, gathering some more food and water to restock along the way. I've survived here in this realm for three years, so for me, this was just another day in the life of a Sorcerer Smurf.
