The sea was always something that interested many sailors across the world. Drawn to the mysterious waters that were treacherous and deep. Dangerous and dark. Full of many things people could never begin to understand. People came from far and wide to come to this specific part of the ocean...because of the myths and theories that came with it. Mythical creatures have always been part of its culture. It lures people in with its wonder and sometimes never lets them escape back into the natural world.
Shuichi had always had a type of interest in the sea, or more specifically a type of creature. Something deadly and dangerous, something no one should ever mess with. He's heard stories of this creature but has never seen it. Probably for the best... He thought to himself, he had been reading a book about the creature "If you ever see it you most likely won't get out alive..." He read out loud "So... encountering this creature almost always means death? Interesting..." The thought of encountering such a mythical creature that was supposedly this dangerous interested the boy. Maybe people are exaggerating about the danger...people do that to scare people all the time. He was in unbelief of the words he had read. Was it really that dangerous? After a few moments of thinking in the quiet room he decided...he was going to see it for himself.
. . .
Leaving on a trip like this wasn't unheard of for Shuichi...but it was definitely something he hadn't done in a long time. Paying for his ticket for a boat ride to go to the mystical place called Shinwa-jo no kemono or also known as Mythical creature. It was known for having various species of these creatures. Well, people who are lucky enough to spot them anyway...some of them have been unfortunately captured and put up for display while others are still unknown by the eyes of many. He was rather excited to be going on a trip like this, he already made sure to pack the necessities and brought a few extra things. He grabbed the book that had all the information people knew about the creature and also grabbed his jacket before walking out the door with his suitcase.
"Here we go," He stepped into the taxi cab to the ship port. He had a ship ride at 18:00. The ride was supposed to only take 20 minutes to get there so he would have some time to himself before he left on the boat.
It was pretty close to where he lived. Shuichi just has never been down to the water as much. When he was younger his mom and dad would take him there sometimes. Now he lives alone because they were lost on a voyage they made many years ago. One day they left on what they said was going to be the best voyage of his father's career...but they never came back.
Shuichi never got to see them again...all he got was a letter from one of their friends that he found the remains of their ship on the coast...Shuichi was devastated that they had both left him to be on his own.
This made it hard for him to like the ocean. He resented it actually. It has taken so much from him...but maybe that's why he was so interested in the ocean at the same time. It was the intrigue of the pull it had on others. Even if they got lost in the deep waters...never to be seen again.
"Here you are sir...be careful around these parts..." The older gentleman driving the taxi bid him farewell. The way he said it made Shuichi shiver. Be careful? He must mean that it can be dangerous going on a boat around Shinwa-jo no kemono. Shuichi thought holding onto his suitcase after he quickly grabbed it from the back of the taxi.
The man drove away in silence leaving Shuichi at the dark port. It wasn't night yet but it was always foggy around the coast where he lives, making it darker than it would usually be. The wind was always slowly blowing across the water. Sometimes it would be calmer than others...but it still gave off a creepy and calm vibe. It was weird to Shuichi. He felt like walking away while at the same time he was drawn to the calming aura of the sea. Weird. Shuichi thought before he went to go sit and wait for the boat.
Not many people were on the dock which made sense seeing as this location was not that popular at this time. It was visited more when the weather was warmer. Shuichi silently thanked himself for deciding to come at this time...because he hates traveling in large groups...especially with a lot of annoying people...
"Hey! Are you coming?" The captain shouted to him and the one other male at the dock. They both stood up and walked over to the boat. The other man looked a little older than him. He was wearing a purple jacket with a white button-up shirt with a red symbol on the front. He had a casual smile on his face that made Shuichi feel a little more welcomed in his presence.
The boat started with a jolt and soon enough they all left the dock. The ocean seems calmer today...the last time I came here, which was forever ago it was a lot more uneasy... He looked off the side of the boat and thought of his parents. Did you guys ever feel nervous about falling into the water? Or were you fearless like all the people remember you? He missed his parents...the only thing he had to remember them by was the stories others told of their adventures.
. . .
Shuichi let his mind wander as they rode on the boat. He wondered what his parents were like. People always were talking so highly of them...but he wanted to know what really happened the day they disappeared. He didn't go with them because he was needed at his grandparent's place...but he always wonders what would have happened if he came with them that day. Where are you guys? Are you still alive? Or should I just accept that you really perished on that ship?
"Here we are!" The captain yelled again with his loud voice. "Thank you," The other man said as he departed from the dock. Shuichi smiled at the man with a wave before he left as well. Shuichi went to look for the cabin his dad used when he came here with his wife, but his eyes were already analyzing his surroundings.
There was a small group of shops along the docks and coast. They weren't very full of people. There were maybe about 10 people Shuichi saw there in total. Interesting...maybe most of them are already out in the water- Shuichi cut himself off when he saw some pink liquid trail in the water. Oh, no...this can't be good...
Shuichi rushed to follow the trail. The cabin can wait! Someone could be really hurt! After running down the coast for about 15 minutes or so he saw something in the distance. It was a creature laying on a rock in the sand with multiple wounds on its body. The one that caught his attention was the one on its tail that was pooling blood in the water around the creature.
"Are you ok?" He yelled as he went to pick up the creature in his arms. He didn't know what to do...he knew that I was better if he didn't call for anyone...because he knew that people around these parts got paid good money for poaching...the creature was still breathing and Shuichi wasn't going to give up on it!
Conveniently his father's cabin was just up a hill near where he was. Shuichi liked how the cabin was so cut off from the town-like area around the docks. Because this made it easier to be able to transport the creature to the cabin.
"It's going to be ok," He whispered to the creature holding it bridal style as he walked up the hill. The creature just took labored breaths as Shuichi walked with it in his arms.
