"That's it! I'm confronting that piece of stepped-on gum today! In fact, I'm going to him right NOW." I say in a high pitched tone, gritting through my teeth. My anxiety has been building up for the past three days. Neither the darn detective would call me nor would he answer my calls. Nana and Rosie keep convincing me to bury the matter and focus on other things, but I just can't seem to get my mind off of Cam. I need to know what happened.
"Mel, I dont think this is a good idea-" Rosie starts.
"Don't even try and stop me. I'm going and having a good talk with him myself." I snap at Rosie before she could even finish her sentence. She rolls her eyes at me but I ignore her as I slip into my sneakers. I grab my black leather jacket and head out the door.
"Oh its the leather jacket. Cam isn't lucky today." She mutters beneath her breath, looking up from her phone.
"Keep the door locked. Whether you're in or outside my room." I instruct Rosie through glaring eyes, shutting the door behind me.
"Yeah, yeah" I hear her say through the door.
...
"Kingswood Hospital?" The driver looks at me through the rear view mirror.
"Yes, the Emergency department."
"Sure, Miss."
It's a 20 minute drive to the hospital. It was the closest one to the police station when the incident occurred. A long drive. I got enough time to shuffle through my thoughts. Cameron Gray you jerk- I imagine myself barging in his hospital room door as I grab him by his collar. How dare you prank me like that? Tell me, how long have you been stalking me? What's your motive? I shift in my seat imagining myself landing a punch on his face.
"Miss, are you aright there?"
"Huh?" I look up, suddenly feeling embarrased.
"You been glaring out the window and throwing punches in the air. Almost convinced me to think someone out there."
"Uh, haha no I'm fine." I say sheepishly.
"You see ghosts, Miss?"
I glared at him through the rear view mirror. Really?
"I apologize." He says immediately looking ahead, eyes on the road.
It was quiet until we reached the location.
"We here, Miss."
I place the money on the armrest console box and step out the car. I flip out my phone to find the text Rosie had sent me earlier.
Ward 510.
I enter the elevator and press the 5th floor button. Just as the doors were about to close, I see a middle aged lady rushing to the elevator door. I immediately open the elevator door for her.
"Oh thank you dear!" She enters, standing beside me.
"No problem! Floor?"
"Oh the 5th floor as well." She smiles at me. Her light brown hair are held back in a clutch. Her nude lipstick almost blends with her pale skin. Her beady eyes gleam through her clear eyeglasses.
"You're quite beautiful." I say.
"Well, thankyou dear." She says, observing me through her glasses. "You look charming, yourself."
I smile back.
..
Ward 510. Ward 510. Ward 510. I'm humming to myself looking for the door. Ward 508, 509, 510. Found it. Let's not think anymore and just barge in? On the count of three.. I quietly open the door expecting Cam to be lying in front of me in a bed. But, I find the room divided into two portions with a huge green curtain in between. The last bed can't be seen as the curtain is pulled over, but the bed in front of me is empty and visible. I take few steps until I'm standing right at the foot of the first bed, inches away from the curtain. Before I could take a step further, I hear Cam talking to someone behind the curtain.
